Potential Complications After Liposuction

Plastic surgery experts remind patients that discomfort like pain, swelling, and bruising often accompanies beauty. Before committing to liposuction, fully understand the post-operative discomfort you'll face. Liposuction doesn't deliver the "overnight perfect figure" promised by some beauty salons. Patients should be prepared for the "pain" that follows surgery.
Intermittent Pain After fat removal, most patients experience discomfort, sometimes severe.Suction-assisted liposuction removes subcutaneous fat between the skin and muscle using negative pressure, a process that is inherently traumatic. Due to the dense distribution of nerve endings in this layer, some nerve damage is unavoidable during surgery, leading to varying degrees of pain. Since nerve recovery is extremely slow, post-operative pain persists for a period. This pain is typically intermittent rather than constant, though it is generally tolerable.Additionally, the irritation from antiseptic solutions may cause redness, swelling, warmth, and pain at the surgical site. This typically lasts 3 to 5 days before gradually subsiding. Once the area is no longer touched, the pain usually disappears. Generally, doctors will prescribe pain medication post-surgery. Patients should take these medications strictly as directed by their doctor and avoid self-medication.
Swelling and Bruising Nearly all patients experience localized swelling and bruising in the treated area post-surgery. This occurs due to minor damage to small blood vessels, lymphatic vessels, capillaries, and lymph capillaries during the procedure, allowing blood and lymph fluid to accumulate in the tissue spaces. This is a normal reaction after liposuction, and patients need not be alarmed. This swelling and bruising will not cause pigmentation or damage skin texture and elasticity. Typically, within 2 to 3 weeks, as new blood vessels and lymphatic vessels grow, the leaked tissue fluid will gradually be absorbed, and the swelling and bruising will fade.
Numbness and Sensory Delay Following liposuction, skin numbness occurs due to damage to the dense network of small cutaneous nerves. This sensation may persist for 6 months to 1 year. During this period, the treated area will feel dull or numb, with significantly reduced sensitivity to temperature. To prevent frostbite or burns, avoid using hot water bottles or ice packs.Patients may perform localized self-massage to enhance blood circulation and promote nerve repair. Self-massage sessions should last 15–30 minutes, twice daily. Professional massage therapy is also recommended, ideally continuing for 3–6 months.
Local Irregularities To prevent post-operative unevenness, plastic surgeons recommend wearing compression garments. Hospitals provide various sizes and specifications for patients to choose from. Typically, the first fitting is done by a doctor to ensure proper technique. Longer wear correlates with better recovery outcomes. Therefore, unless discomfort occurs, garments should ideally be worn day and night for at least 6 months.
Hematoma Hematoma is a relatively serious complication, though uncommon. It primarily results from two causes: First, vascular damage during surgery may cause bleeding. When blood accumulates in narrow tissue spaces, it forms a hematoma.Second, some patients may be sensitive to the epinephrine in the tumescent solution. This can cause vasoconstriction and occlusion during administration. Once the epinephrine wears off, rebound bleeding or hemorrhage may occur, leading to hematoma formation. If a hematoma develops, seek medical attention promptly. Do not attempt self-massage or cold compresses.
