As the saying goes: Necessity is the mother of invention. In daily life, people often resort to extreme measures like liposuction, drugs, or starvation diets for beauty or career demands. Similarly, U.S. military personnel resort to such methods to meet the military's weight standards.Fox News recently cited Army Times reports stating that due to stringent weight requirements in military evaluations, many overweight personnel resort to "self-harming" weight loss methods despite health risks."I can confirm soldiers are using liposuction, laxatives, and starvation to lose weight. I've used them before, I use them now, and I'll use them again."
The soldier's revelation is not uncommon in military barracks. The primary reason is that excess weight is widespread among personnel. According to a 2009 U.S. military health report, approximately one-third of personnel failed to meet prescribed weight standards.Simultaneously, the U.S. military enforces rigorous physical fitness standards. Soldiers undergo annual health screenings, while officers face additional tape measurements (a method measuring body fat percentage by wrapping tape around specific body areas) to verify fat distribution.
Current regulations stipulate that overweight personnel are barred from leadership positions or promotions.More severely, overweight officers who fail to lose weight within two months after testing may face dismissal. This rule is no joke—a military report reveals that between 1992 and 2007, 24,000 soldiers were discharged for being too obese. Under such pressure, personnel—especially officers—resort to extreme measures to protect their careers.
Businesses have also detected commercial opportunities in the needs of military personnel. A female soldier from Fort Riley, Kansas, reported seeing liposuction advertisements in the base gym, with similar promotions appearing in newspapers at several other bases. "Half my military career has been spent in a cycle of weight gain and loss," said another Army lieutenant colonel. "I once starved myself, surviving on just bread and water......What service members will do to pass inspections is no secret to military leaders."
