For newcomers to the workplace, mastering interpersonal skills is crucial. If you mishandle relationships, your career will face constant obstacles. Building solid professional connections is the first step toward workplace success. So how can you become a networking pro?Master these five techniques to navigate the workplace with ease:
1. Understand People and Human Nature
The first step to improving interpersonal skills and mastering successful relationships is correctly understanding people and human nature. This can be simply summarized as "acknowledging people based on their inherent nature" and "empathizing with others' perspectives." Avoid viewing others through your own lens or imposing your will upon them.People are primarily interested in themselves, not you! In other words, an individual cares about themselves ten thousand times more than they care about you. Recognizing that "people care about themselves first, not you" is a key insight for navigating life.
II. Know What Not to Say
When conversing, choose topics that interest them most. What interests them most? Themselves! Remove these words from your vocabulary: "I, myself, my." Replace them with one of the most powerful words in human language: "you."Whether you find the conversation interesting is irrelevant; what matters is whether your listener does. When speaking with someone, talk about them and guide them to talk about themselves. This will make you the most sought-after conversation partner.
III. Make Them Feel Important
One of humanity's most universal traits is the desire to be acknowledged and understood.Do you want to thrive in relationships? Then make others feel valued. Remember: the more you make someone feel important, the more they'll reciprocate.
IV. Learn to Listen
The more you listen, the wiser you become—and the more people will like you, making you a better conversationalist.Of course, becoming a good listener isn't easy—it requires maintaining eye contact with the speaker and avoiding interruptions, among other things. V. Know What They Want and Give It to Them The first step in getting people to act according to your wishes is discovering what motivates them (i.e., what they desire). Tell people what they want to hear, and they'll be moved.Simply explain that accomplishing what you ask will help them achieve their goals. The key to "understanding what people want" lies in asking questions, observing, listening, and putting in consistent effort.
