However, these benefits are often based on the expectation of a permanent solution, with little consideration given to the basic principles of implant care and maintenance. This oversight causes dentists some concern.After implant-supported denture restoration, although the implant serves as an artificial tooth root, it is not a natural tooth and requires diligent care to ensure its lifelong functionality. Therefore, it is essential to advise patients undergoing dental implant procedures:
(1) Dental implant procedures typically involve two stages: the initial placement of the artificial tooth root, followed by the attachment of a fixed prosthesis onto the stabilized implant.After implant placement, do not wear temporary dentures until sutures are removed. Wait 7–10 days for suture removal before determining whether adjustments are needed and whether to wear them.
(2) For 3–6 months after suture removal, protect the implant by avoiding forceful chewing. This prevents loosening of the implant and preserves the newly formed bone around it, which is critical for successful integration.
(3) Maintain good oral hygiene after implant placement. Rinse your mouth promptly after meals, using medicated mouthwash if desired. Clean the implant abutment area once daily, morning and night, using a soft-bristled brush or cotton swab.
(4) After receiving the porcelain crown, gradually increase the hardness of foods you chew. Avoid external impacts and refrain from immediately chewing excessively hard items. If an impact occurs that may have damaged the implant, seek immediate examination and treatment at the hospital.Typically, follow-up appointments are scheduled at 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, and 12 months.
(6) After receiving the porcelain crown, pay special attention to maintaining hygiene in the areas between adjacent teeth to prevent cavities in neighboring teeth.
