How long does dental implant placement take? When people hear "dental implant," their first thought is likely planting a seed that sprouts into a tooth. However, current medical technology cannot implant a tooth germ into the jawbone to naturally grow into a tooth.Dental implants involve placing a titanium screw (commonly called an implant) into the jawbone, followed by attaching a prosthetic tooth to the implant. This implant functions as the root of a natural tooth. Because it can fuse tightly with the jawbone, it provides stable support for the prosthetic tooth visible above the gumline.
How long does dental implant treatment take?
Implant systems generally involve a two-stage process: single-stage implants and two-stage implants. Single-stage systems feature an abutment directly connected to the implant, with the abutment extending into the oral cavity. Two-stage systems use separate abutments and implants; after the implant integrates with the surrounding bone, the mucoperiosteum is incised to attach the abutment.
The entire implant process requires time: restoration timelines differ between methods. Single-stage cylindrical implants are simpler and more efficient, completed in one surgery. Temporary restorations can be placed immediately after suture removal. Permanent restorations follow after three months of implant stabilization for impressions and several weeks for final placement.
It is best to avoid immediate restoration after surgery. Wait 8 weeks for implant stabilization before placing a temporary restoration, then proceed with the permanent restoration after 6 months.
Following the initial implant placement (3-6 months for maxillary, 3-4 months for mandibular), once osseointegration is complete, the implant can support a restoration. At this stage, a second-stage surgery is performed to expose the abutment.
After an additional 2 weeks, restorative treatment can commence, with regular follow-up appointments. This implant method is widely adopted due to its excellent outcomes. The healing process requires 3-6 months for all implant types before restoration begins. Bone remodeling occurs over 6-18 months, after which the implant enters a stable phase. However, patients must attend regular check-ups to ensure prompt intervention if any issues arise.
