Diet After Hemorrhoid Surgery
Consume liquid foods on the first postoperative day, transitioning to regular foods on days 2–3. To maintain bowel regularity and nutritional balance, advise patients to eat more fresh fruits and vegetables, easily digestible, low-fat foods. Avoid overeating and encourage timely bowel movements.Days 5–7 post-surgery coincide with suture absorption. Instruct patients to minimize fiber-rich foods, focusing instead on refined, soft, and easily digestible options. Avoid raw, cold, spicy, or irritating foods.
Adequate hydration is essential post-hemorrhoid surgery. Maintaining sufficient intestinal moisture—where water content exceeds intestinal absorption—facilitates stool softening.Beyond water intake, incorporate soft foods, porridge, and dairy products into all three daily meals to enhance intestinal hydration.
After a period following hemorrhoid surgery, gradually increase consumption of foods rich in coarse fiber. Certain plant fibers in food resist digestion within the intestines, absorb water to form hydrophilic colloids, and promote stool softening.Vegetables and fruits contain more water than grains, so they should be consumed in greater quantities. Coarse grains have a stronger laxative effect than refined grains. Include foods like corn porridge, rice, sweet potatoes, Chinese cabbage, and leeks in your diet.
1.Meat, Egg, and Dairy Choices: Lean pork, pork intestines, duck meat, soft-shelled turtle, sea cucumber, milk, and soy products. When experiencing significant rectal bleeding, opt for foods with hemostatic properties like eel or black fish.
3. Vegetable choices: Celery, Chinese chives, winter melon, loofah, spinach, water spinach, eggplant, Chinese cabbage, radish, daylily buds, water chestnuts, etc. During bloody stools, consume black fungus and fresh lotus root to nourish blood and stop bleeding.
4. Other foods: Walnuts, sesame seeds, dried persimmons, honey; use more sesame oil or rapeseed oil in cooking to increase lubrication of intestinal contents.
What to eat after hemorrhoid surgery?
1. Persimmons
Persimmons help prevent hemorrhoids.Traditional Chinese medicine considers persimmons astringent (though this taste is removed with simple preparation) and cold in nature. They soften hardened masses, clear heat, dispel dryness, strengthen the spleen, and generate fluids. Thus, they effectively prevent constipation and alleviate dry stools or bleeding. Additionally, persimmons help reduce hypertension and arteriosclerosis.
2. Black Fungus (Wood Ear Mushroom)
Consuming black fungus can nourish the blood and stop bleeding when experiencing post-hemorrhoid surgery bleeding. Rich in protein, fat, polysaccharides, calcium, phosphorus, iron, carotene, and vitamin B1, it promotes blood circulation, moistens the lungs, generates fluids, and treats hemorrhoidal bleeding.
3. Tomatoes
Tomatoes, also known as red tomatoes, have a sweet and sour taste with a slightly cold nature. They promote fluid production to quench thirst, cool the blood and calm the liver, strengthen the stomach and aid digestion, moisten the intestines and relieve constipation, clear heat and detoxify, and tonify the kidneys while promoting urination. Tomatoes are a common vegetable in daily life, particularly suitable for those with fluid depletion from fever, thirst, poor appetite, internal summer heat, gastrointestinal heat accumulation, or excessive liver and gallbladder heat. Individuals with constipation, hemorrhoids, or anal fissures should consume them regularly.
4. Lotus Root
Occasional minor bleeding during bowel movements after hemorrhoid surgery typically requires no intervention. However, around one week post-surgery, secondary bleeding may occur if ligature threads slip due to local tissue atrophy/necrosis or friction from stool. In such cases, lotus root slices may be appropriately administered to promote hemostasis and astringency.
