Cervical spondylosis is increasingly common among younger individuals. Prolonged desk work and the rise of "phone zombies" who constantly look down at their devices place significant strain on our cervical vertebrae. Stiff shoulders and neck discomfort are frequent occurrences. With most of our time consumed by work and daily chores, exercise time has drastically decreased. Over time, this has a profound impact on our health.
Numerous approaches exist for treating cervical spondylosis. Maintain a balanced work-life rhythm, incorporating stretching exercises to alleviate shoulder and neck discomfort. Avoid using excessively high pillows at night, as they can compress the cervical spine.Beyond daily care, we can also treat cervical spondylosis through specific methods. Traditional Chinese medicine techniques like massage and heat therapy are well-suited for daily practice. Additionally, incorporating dietary remedies into our meals can provide supplementary treatment.
The massage technique for cervical spondylosis treatment consists of four steps: Step 1: Use your fingers to knead the area from the hairline at the back of the neck to the shoulder-neck junction for 3-5 minutes each time. Step 2: Massage the shoulder muscles for 3-5 minutes.Step three: Raise both arms, bring palms toward the chest, keep the head still, and rotate the shoulders forward and backward for 3-5 minutes. The final step involves slowly turning the head to the left until reaching the maximum range of motion, then turning to the right. Repeat this rotation for 3-5 minutes. These movements effectively relax the shoulder and neck muscles, helping to prevent or alleviate symptoms of cervical spondylosis.
For herbal compress therapy, grind selected Chinese herbs into powder, then stir-fry with salt or rice wine into a paste. Place the mixture into a cloth pouch, steam it in a pot until warm, and apply it to the shoulder and neck area. Ensure the pouch's heat remains within a tolerable range for the shoulders and neck. Each application should last about half an hour. You may divide the herbs into two pouches and use them alternately. Consult a professional physician for the specific herbs needed in the compress.
Beyond these methods, oral herbal remedies or medicinal pillows can also aid treatment.
For internal use, select herbs that nourish the liver and kidneys, enrich essence and blood, dispel wind-dampness, and activate meridians. This approach requires professional diagnosis to match herbs to specific conditions; self-medication is inadvisable.
For herbal pillow therapy, ingredients like Angelica sinensis, Ligusticum chuanxiong, Saposhnikovia divaricata, and Clematis chinensis—known for promoting blood circulation, dispersing stasis, unblocking meridians, and warding off wind and cold—are ground into powder and used as pillow stuffing. Sleeping on this pillow aids cervical spondylosis treatment while also preventing rheumatoid arthritis, lumbar disc disease, and other conditions, offering multiple benefits.
Comb therapy offers another approach to cervical spondylosis treatment. The head hosts numerous meridians and acupoints connected to the body. Daily combing with a wooden comb helps unblock meridians and promote blood circulation, thereby alleviating shoulder stiffness and soreness to some extent.
Among these traditional Chinese medicine approaches to cervical spondylosis, some can be self-administered—like massage and combing—while others require professional assistance for medication preparation, such as herbal decoctions, herbal compresses, and medicinal pillows. Regardless of the method chosen, individual circumstances vary, so select based on personal needs rather than blindly following trends. What suits you best is the optimal choice.
