Frozen shoulder, commonly known as adhesive capsulitis or "fifty-shoulder," initially presents as dull shoulder pain and limited joint mobility. As pain intensifies, it may temporarily subside before chronic inflammation develops in the shoulder joint capsule and surrounding tissues. This condition predominantly affects middle-aged and elderly women around 50, particularly those engaged in physical labor. So what are the treatment methods for frozen shoulder?
1. Individuals who frequently engage in labor or household chores are highly susceptible to frozen shoulder. This is because their entire arm, including the shoulder, is constantly in motion and often overused. Prolonged exposure to this state of tension and fatigue makes the shoulder prone to injury. Therefore, it is essential to balance work and rest, ensuring each task is performed in moderation without placing excessive strain on the shoulder.
2. In daily life, avoid pulling the arm with excessive force, whether by others or yourself. If an accidental strain occurs, seek prompt medical treatment.
3. In the early stages of frozen shoulder, seek physical therapy at a hospital's rehabilitation department for massage therapy and infrared light treatment.
4. When pain is severe and localized, consider local nerve block injections with corticosteroids like prednisone to alleviate discomfort.
5. Whether writing at a desk, working on a computer, or performing manual tasks while bending over, maintain proper posture.Improper posture forces the body into awkward positions. Over time, this can lead to various issues like lumbar disc herniation, loss of natural spinal curvature, and frozen shoulder. Therefore, adopt the most comfortable and appropriate posture for any activity to effectively prevent conditions like frozen shoulder.
6. Before developing frozen shoulder, limit physical activity; once diagnosed, encourage movement. Daily shoulder exercises should be maintained without causing pain, such as reaching high overhead or interlocking fingers behind your back. These help loosen adhesions within the joint.
Treatment Methods for Frozen Shoulder
Medical approaches to treating frozen shoulder generally include the following therapeutic methods.
1. Pain Relief with Western Medications
These only alleviate pain without addressing its root cause. Long-term use can lead to dependency and toxic side effects, offering no benefit while irritating the stomach and intestines and damaging the liver and kidneys.
2. Block Therapy
Commonly known as nerve block injections, this involves directly injecting medication into the spinal canal or around nerve roots to achieve local anesthesia and pain relief. Symptoms return immediately after the block wears off.Surgical Treatment
Due to extremely strict indications, clinically suitable candidates for surgery constitute less than 5% of patients. Combined with high costs, significant trauma, prolonged recovery periods, and high recurrence rates, this approach cannot be widely adopted.
5. Traction Therapy
Extensive clinical trials within the medical community have demonstrated that traction therapy can only alleviate pain for most patients.
7. Tuina and Acupuncture Therapy
These share similar objectives with physical therapy, primarily focusing on alleviating clinical symptoms rather than providing a curative solution.Slow-roast both ingredients in a pan until warm. Add an appropriate amount of alcohol, mix thoroughly, wrap in cloth, and apply to the affected area while hot. Remove once the heat dissipates. Reheat and reapply with alcohol the next day. Discard after 4-5 uses. Apply once daily for a 7-10 day treatment course. This remedy is also effective for lumbar muscle strain, acute lumbar sprains, and arthritis.
Folk Remedy Two
Combine 15g each of Achyranthes root, ginger, Ligusticum root, and Clematis root with 12g of Notopterygium root. Decoct in water and strain the liquid. Separately, stir-fry 300-400g of wheat bran in a pan until golden. While hot, mix it with the herbal decoction, add 1 tablespoon of vinegar, and pack into a gauze bag. Apply to the affected area while warm. Use once daily for a 10-day course.
For treating frozen shoulder, we generally employ comprehensive Traditional Chinese Medicine approaches in clinical practice.
Physical Therapy for Frozen Shoulder
1. Bending Over and Rotating the Shoulder
The patient bends over with arms hanging down, swings the affected arm, and performs circular movements centered on the shoulder—either inward to outward or outward to inward. The swinging motion of the arm drives shoulder joint movement.
2. Functional Exercises
Functional exercises are crucial for patients with frozen shoulder. Remember: "Three parts treatment, seven parts practice." Encourage patients to perform shoulder joint movements frequently, especially those with appropriate range of motion. This significantly helps prevent shoulder joint adhesions, tightness, and contractures of the soft tissues.
3. Traditional Chinese Medicine
Formulas such as Blood-Nourishing and Tendon-Strengthening Pills or Blood-Activating and Pain-Relieving Powder may be taken. Alternatively, apply heat compresses or hot packs with herbs that promote blood circulation, resolve stasis, relax tendons, activate meridians, reduce swelling, and disperse nodules.
4. Backward Squats
Stand facing away from a table, hands resting on the edge. Perform repeated squatting motions to enhance backward shoulder extension.
5. Wall Climbing
Stand facing a wall with hands raised to grasp it. Strive to climb upward, aiming to reach higher than the previous day.
6. Cupping Therapy
Common acupoints for cupping in shoulder periarthritis treatment include: Jianjing (GB21), Jianyu (LI15), Jianqian (LI14), Jianzhen (BL15), and Tianzong (SI11). Select two points per session, alternating locations.Perform 1-2 sessions weekly.
8. Acupuncture
Common acupuncture points for shoulder periarthritis include: Jianjing (GB21), Jiānyǔ (SI11), Jiānqián (SI12), Jiānzhēn (SI13), Dazhui (GV14), Quchi (LI11), Waiguan (TE5), and Wanzhu (TE5). Use 1-1.5-inch needles. Disinfect skin with 75% alcohol swabs, insert needles into selected points, and retain for 20-30 minutes.Perform once daily. One treatment course lasts two weeks.
9. Physical Therapy
Apply high-frequency electromagnetic therapies like ultra-shortwave once daily for a 10-day course. This helps reduce inflammation, relieve pain, ease spasms, improve blood circulation, and relax muscles.
The above outlines methods for treating frozen shoulder. Have you seen it? How can you know if it works without trying? Give it a shot. For severe cases, please seek timely medical attention. Wishing you a speedy recovery.
