Modern medicine attributes its onset to cold, dry conditions... Below, we detail three folk remedies for treating cheilitis.
Chronic cheilitis, also known as exfoliative cheilitis or chronic photochemical cheilitis, is characterized by redness and swelling of the lip mucosa, accompanied by symptoms such as wind-induced chapping, cracking, and peeling. The condition fluctuates in severity and often persists without resolution over time.Modern medicine attributes its onset to factors like cold, dryness, sun exposure, tobacco and alcohol irritation, as well as habits such as lip-licking, lip-biting, or playing wind instruments. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) refers to it as "lip wind" (唇风), positing that the condition may arise from wind-fire toxins accumulating on the lips; excessive consumption of pungent or rich foods leading to spleen-stomach damp-heat scorching the lips; or blood dryness in the skin meridian generating wind. The accumulation of internal toxins (excessive lung and stomach fire) ultimately leads to chronicity. This often results from patients rushing to find a cure, resorting to indiscriminate medication, which ultimately causes recurrent flare-ups and a protracted, difficult-to-cure condition.
