In June 2019, 18-year-old Xiao Qiang (pseudonym) suffered multiple injuries and fell into a deep coma after falling from a height. Following surgery, he underwent rehabilitation at a hospital for over two months but remained unable to move his limbs, experiencing convulsions and persistent unconsciousness. His family sought help through referrals and brought Xiao Qiang to Hefei Kanghua Rehabilitation Hospital for treatment.
Upon admission, the hospital's Critical Care Medicine Department, led by Directors Huang Jun and Wu Chengzhi, initiated early intervention and management for comatose patients with severe traumatic brain injury. They conducted a comprehensive rehabilitation assessment tailored to Xiaqiang's condition and developed a detailed treatment plan.Comprehensive rehabilitation included neuroprotective medication, circulatory enhancement, arousal protocols, hemiplegic limb rehabilitation, joint range-of-motion exercises, and hyperbaric oxygen therapy, supplemented by nutritional support. Nursing care implemented Level 1 care protocols, including regular repositioning and back percussion.
The hospital's Critical Care Medicine Department implemented systematic rehabilitation for Xiaoqiang using a combined approach of comprehensive rehabilitation therapies and a dedicated rehabilitation team. This included joint range-of-motion training, swallowing function electrical stimulation, electric standing beds, medium-frequency pulse electrotherapy, and multi-person hyperbaric oxygen chambers. This established a rehabilitation process grounded in functional assessment → rehabilitation therapy → outcome evaluation.Simultaneously, based on the second and third phases of rehabilitation treatment and the differing stages of recovery, rehabilitation nursing implemented Level 1 and Level 2 care respectively. This approach combined acute-phase treatment with recovery-phase rehabilitation, integrating medical and engineering expertise.After nearly a year of rehabilitation training, Xiaoqiang has progressed from severe coma upon admission to significant improvements in limb muscle strength, muscle tone, and cognitive function. He now laughs heartily when shown entertaining videos and can complete corresponding tasks when given instructions during communication. Witnessing his son's recovery, his father teared up: "Thank you to the hospital's doctors and nurses for their immense patience with patients."
