How much damage does pinching your nose to blow it cause to your ears? The answer depends on whether you're doing it correctly.
When experiencing a cold, nasal congestion, or difficulty expelling thick yellow or clear mucus, the correct method is to press one nostril closed while blowing the other, then alternate sides. This technique of pinching nostrils while blowing is both proper and scientifically sound.
However, some people pinch both nostrils simultaneously and blow forcefully. Since pressure cannot escape through the other nostril, all the pressure is forced out through the ears.Since the ear and nose are connected, this action forces pressure from the nasal cavity into the ear. It also carries harmful bacteria, viruses, and even pus-filled mucus into the middle ear, potentially causing ear congestion, hearing loss, or even middle ear infections like otitis media.
