As autumn arrives, the weather gradually cools and the air becomes increasingly dry. During this time, eyes often feel dry and fatigued due to dehydration. To alleviate discomfort, many people use eye drops.
When applying eye drops, many people open their eyes wide and drip the solution directly onto the eyeball. However, this method is not recommended. The eyeball (cornea) contains numerous nerves. Directly applying eye drops can cause irritation, triggering a reflexive blink that forces the solution out of the eye, rendering it ineffective for relieving eye fatigue. So, what is the correct method for applying eye drops?
Have you mastered the 8 steps for applying eye drops?
1. Identify the condition before using medication.Eye conditions vary widely—dry eye syndrome, cataracts, glaucoma, or simple eye strain and dryness. Each requires specific eye drops; never use them indiscriminately. Otherwise, symptoms may worsen, disrupt the eye's microbial balance, or cause antibiotic resistance.
2. Wash hands. Always thoroughly cleanse hands before applying eye drops to prevent finger contamination and eye infections.
3. Tilt head back. Tilt your head back and look straight upward before applying drops, or lie flat on your back.
4. Pull down lower eyelid. Gently pull down the lower eyelid with your left index finger.
5. Apply the drops. With the lower eyelid held down, use your right hand to place 1-2 drops into the lower eyelid pocket. Keep the bottle tip about 2 cm away from the eye.
6. Close your eyes. After applying the drops, gently close your eyes and use a tissue to wipe away any overflowing tears.
