As the weather warms up, many parents take their children to shopping malls on weekends. They assume malls are relatively enclosed spaces with few dangers, yet overlook some hidden "killers." To ensure children's safety, parents must stay vigilant. Check the following safety dos and don'ts for taking kids to malls—have you made any of these mistakes?
1.Avoid wearing flip-flops on escalators
The soft material of flip-flops makes them prone to getting caught in the serrated edges between escalator steps. Once trapped, the friction makes them extremely difficult to remove. Many malls explicitly post signs advising against wearing flip-flops on escalators.
2. No roughhousing on escalators
It's common to see children twisting, jumping, or rushing up escalators in shopping malls. Worse still, some parents don't intervene when their kids play on moving steps—all potential hazards. Parents should keep a close eye on children, ideally positioning them directly in front of you.Avoid stepping on the yellow safety warning lines or the areas where two steps connect. Never walk or run on the escalator to prevent falls.
3. Don't treat revolving doors as toys
Some malls use revolving doors, which children often mistake for play equipment. When entering with children, explain the dangers of these doors. Keep both of your child's hands tucked in front of their chest to prevent them from curiously inserting fingers into the rotating gaps. Alternatively, hold your child's hand to prevent them from being knocked by the door's rapid rotation.
4. Never leave children unattended in fitting rooms
Leaving children alone while you try on clothes can easily lead to them getting lost. If you need to try on clothes, either bring your child into the fitting room or have someone accompany or watch them. Never let them out of your sight to prevent them from wandering off.
5. Never stand inside shopping carts
Many parents place children in shopping carts to keep them within sight while grocery shopping. However, restless children wriggling in carts risk falling out. Instruct children to sit securely in designated seats and never allow them to stand inside the cart.
6. Different approaches for escalators with strollers
Some parents place strollers directly on escalators, standing behind them for support. The steep incline of escalators poses significant risks—an accident could have devastating consequences. When pushing a stroller on escalators, keep it as level as possible. When going up, keep the rear wheels on the steps with the front wheels slightly raised. When going down, hold the stroller and step backward, keeping the rear wheels slightly raised and the front wheels on the steps. The safest option is to carry the child and push the empty stroller.
7. Neglecting slip prevention on rainy days
Mall floors are often slippery, posing risks even for adults. Children, being playful and energetic, love to run and jump. If it's wet outside, they become more prone to slipping and falling indoors. To prevent slips and injuries, have your child wipe their shoes dry on a mat before entering the mall on rainy days. When shopping, choose shoes with non-slip soles for your child.
Editor's Note
Many parents enjoy taking their children shopping, yet few pay attention to potential hazards in public spaces like malls. Prevention is key—parents should remain vigilant and never take safety lightly. Additionally, instill safety awareness in children daily, helping them recognize dangers and know how to respond if they occur.
