Depression requires prompt treatment upon detection. Never dismiss it as mere low mood or a minor ailment that will resolve when happy events occur. Take note: depression is no trivial matter. In severe cases, it can endanger the lives of both the patient and others. Severe depression can lead to suicidal thoughts and actions. They may even seek revenge on society by taking others with them in suicide, believing this act to be a form of liberation for others.
Symptoms of Depression
1. Loss of Appetite
Depressed individuals often lose interest in everything, including food. After developing the condition, they may remain indifferent even to their favorite dishes, lacking any desire to eat.Severe cases may skip meals entirely, driven by a complete disinterest in eating.
Prolonged malnutrition leads to pallor, a listless demeanor, and progressive weight loss. Female patients may experience amenorrhea—insufficient nutrients prevent adequate blood production. With insufficient blood, menstrual flow is disrupted, ultimately ceasing.
2. Slowed Thinking
Individuals with depression often become reluctant to speak, gradually reducing their verbal output. Responses to questions become delayed as they remain immersed in their own internal world. Patients may withdraw into silence and immobility, appearing wooden or unresponsive.
3. Sleep Disturbances
Sleep patterns in depression patients often swing to extremes: either excessive sleepiness where they feel perpetually tired no matter how much they rest, or nightly insomnia making it difficult to fall asleep. Those suffering from insomnia are prone to racing thoughts, sometimes even contemplating suicide.
An inner voice seems to whisper, "Death brings an end to suffering, death offers release—come with me." Suicidal thoughts persist, with death perceived as the ultimate escape.
4. Persistent Low Mood
Depression plunges individuals into prolonged low moods. Severe cases may lose all emotional connection to the outside world while simultaneously struggling to regulate their own feelings. They lose interest in everything, drowning in sadness daily, feeling utterly empty and unloved.
This mental torment is more excruciating than physical pain. It fuels repeated suicidal thoughts and even attempts. In extreme cases, suicidal actions become involuntary—without supervision, they may easily act on these impulses.
Key Considerations for Treating Severe Depression
1. Avoid Alcohol
Some turn to alcohol to drown their sorrows when feeling low. However, getting drunk merely escapes problems and worries. While intoxication may bring temporary relief, the underlying issues remain unresolved. Upon sobering up, one must still confront these problems, often feeling even worse emotionally.Eventually, emotions will erupt. Therefore, if you're feeling down, avoid alcohol. Instead, go out for a walk to clear your mind.
2. Engage in Moderate Exercise
Physical activity is crucial for stretching muscles and relaxing the body. Maintaining a relaxed state prevents constant nervous tension.Consider taking walks early in the morning or after dinner. You could also join a gym and choose an exercise you enjoy, or go hiking.
Beyond exercise, avoid staying home all the time. Try traveling locally, meeting friends for meals and drinks, or volunteering. Engage more with others—step out of your shell, learn to express and share your feelings, and dispel unhappiness more quickly.
