Among the six pathogenic factors—wind, cold, heat, dampness, dryness, and fire—dampness poses the greatest threat. Improper lifestyle habits can also allow dampness to invade, harming health. Therefore, it is essential to eliminate the following bad habits. Bad Habits That Invite Dampness Insufficient sleep. From a traditional Chinese medicine perspective, lack of sleep indicates spleen deficiency. Adequate rest also helps maintain a lighter, more balanced body.Aim to sleep before 11 PM each night. Adding daily exercise can significantly improve sleep quality.
Excessive salt intake. Gastrointestinal function directly impacts nutrient and fluid metabolism. The optimal approach is moderate, balanced eating. Greasy, overly salty, or excessively sweet foods are difficult to digest and can cause stomach bloating and inflammation. Sweets and fried foods promote the production of peroxides in the body, exacerbating inflammatory responses.
Preferring cold foods. Traditional Chinese Medicine holds that raw, cold foods, ice cream, or cooling fruits and vegetables can slow digestive absorption, creating openings for external pathogens. Therefore, avoid excessive consumption. When cooking vegetables, add scallions or ginger to counteract their cooling properties.
Excessive alcohol consumption. This is a key factor in aggravating "damp-heat toxicity." From a TCM perspective, alcohol promotes dampness. Therefore, alcohol should be minimized, and one should never drown sorrows in drink.
Insufficient exercise. Those who exercise little often experience symptoms of excessive dampness, such as heaviness in the body and weakness in the limbs. The less one exercises, the more dampness accumulates internally. Over time, this can lead to illness.Moderate exercise like running, brisk walking, or swimming promotes coordinated organ function and accelerates "dampness elimination."
Prolonged sitting. Extended sitting reduces blood flow to the brain, diminishing oxygen and nutrient supply. This exacerbates fatigue, insomnia, and memory decline while triggering muscle aches, neck stiffness, headaches, and dizziness.
