The pursuit of perfection is a common mindset. People often strive for perfection, yet many things are already quite good. However, they still feel dissatisfied. This compulsive behavior can easily lead to feelings of frustration. So why are people in the workplace prone to developing compulsive disorders? And how can one alleviate such compulsions?
Generally speaking, occupation, a strong personality, and excessive pressure are the three major triggers for compulsive behavior in the workplace.First, industries like accounting, power generation, and aviation involve financial or personal safety. A single oversight could cause significant losses, compelling professionals with heavy responsibilities to repeatedly check and verify—sometimes extending these compulsive behaviors into their personal lives. Second, driven and perfectionist individuals often set numerous goals or rules for themselves, dictating what must be done and what must be avoided. While this drive can fuel success, excessive competitiveness or perfectionism creates immense strain. Finally, high stress elevates anxiety, activating the autonomic nervous system that controls bodily functions. This triggers unconscious, compulsive "tics" as a form of stress release.
So, how can one alleviate OCD?
Learn to relax
Excessive tension only worsens the situation, trapping the brain in a vicious cycle of obsessive thoughts. Try to adopt a more relaxed perspective toward areas where compulsions arise. Exercise is the best physical relaxation method. Immerse yourself fully in physical activity, energizing your entire body. This stimulates the brain to release more "feel-good chemicals." After a sweaty run, you might find yourself more appreciative of the world's beauty.
Failure Is Just an Experience
Don't fear failure. Instead of endlessly worrying about "what if I fail," tell yourself: So what if I fail? It doesn't mean your whole life is a failure. Setbacks themselves are a form of education. Many successful people achieved their goals precisely because they endured countless failures before finding their true calling and the right path forward.
Mental Affirmation
For instance, if you doubt whether you locked the car door, after locking it the first time, stand beside the car and repeatedly tell yourself: "I locked the door. I can walk away now. It's fine!" Repeat this affirmation several times and make it a consistent practice.
Self-Tracking
Create a tracking sheet to identify areas where you exhibit repetitive compulsive behaviors throughout the day, noting the frequency of each repetition. Simultaneously, set goals for yourself to gradually reduce the number of compulsive actions.
Regarding workplace compulsions, occupational health experts note that psychological distress is common among modern individuals navigating high-pressure, uncertain environments. It's unwise to casually label oneself or others with such terms. Whether a condition constitutes a psychological disorder and its severity requires professional assessment based on individual circumstances.
