Regular, moderate milk consumption supports bone growth and development, positively enhancing physical health. However, Chongqing nutrition experts caution that while milk offers high nutritional value, improper consumption may cause adverse effects. Therefore, pay attention to the following aspects for proper milk intake.
First, milk isn't suitable for everyone. Individuals frequently exposed to lead, those with lactose intolerance, milk allergies, reflux esophagitis, patients who have undergone abdominal or gastric resection surgery, irritable bowel syndrome sufferers, and those with cholecystitis or pancreatitis should avoid milk.Milk is categorized by fat content into whole milk, semi-skimmed milk, and skim milk. Whole milk retains all milk components, offers rich flavor, and is high in calories—suitable for children, pregnant women, and the elderly. Semi-skimmed milk is a mainstream consumer option, generally recommended for middle-aged adults. Individuals with hypertension, hyperlipidemia, thrombosis, diabetes, or obesity should opt for skim milk.
Secondly, milk should not be consumed as a substitute for water. While milk contains substantial water content, it is a hypertonic beverage. Excessive intake or consumption during periods of sweating or dehydration can lead to dehydration. Additionally, calcium and magnesium ions in milk can form complexes with medications, potentially reducing their efficacy when taken together.
Third, milk consumption should be moderate. Regular intake does not cause protein overload—a 250ml carton contains only 7-8 grams of protein, representing just 1/100th of the daily protein requirement. Adults may consume 250ml daily, while children, adolescents, pregnant women, nursing mothers, and adults over 50 may have up to 500ml daily. If daily intake reaches 500ml, opt for low-fat or skim milk to avoid excessive fat consumption. Fourth, milk should be consumed warm, not boiled. It can be heated but never boiled. Boiling causes milk proteins to transform from a sol to a gel state under high temperatures, leading to calcium precipitation. Additionally, the vitamin C and other vitamins originally present are destroyed, reducing nutritional value.
Finally, time your milk consumption wisely. Avoid drinking milk on an empty stomach, pairing it with tea or coffee, or adding orange or lemon juice. The fruit acids in these juices denature milk proteins, diminishing their nutritional value. When drinking milk in the morning, pair it with starchy cereal foods. Individuals experiencing poor sleep or those who are underweight may benefit from an additional glass of milk before bedtime.
