Drowning is the most common accidental injury among children during summer vacation. "Compared to other types of accidents, drowning incidents involving children are often far more severe," explains Professor Wang Quan, Director of the Emergency Department at the National Children's Medical Center and Beijing Children's Hospital. Drowning for even a few minutes can cause irreversible damage to the body. Among common childhood injuries, drowning accounts for the highest proportion of severe injuries, reaching 43.4%.
"If someone is drowning, rescuers should first ensure their own safety before quickly pulling the victim out of the water. Immediately assess whether the victim is conscious and has breathing or a pulse. For those without breathing or a pulse, call 120 immediately and perform on-site CPR continuously until emergency personnel arrive."" Wang Quan emphasized that precious golden rescue time should not be wasted on non-life-saving measures like draining water.
"Lack of safety awareness cannot be overlooked. Even well-educated white-collar parents often fail to provide effective supervision," Wang Quan said. Parents should not assume that simply giving a child a swim ring solves everything. In reality, swim rings are not lifesaving devices."Some parents appear to be present but are engrossed in their phones, leading to drowning incidents—this is ineffective supervision caused by poor safety awareness."
Correct First Aid Procedures:
1. Immediately remove the victim from the water.
2. Clear obstructions from the mouth and nose to ensure airway patency.
