Massage therapy can help us relax while promoting physical well-being, but it requires precise targeting of acupoints. Incorrectly massaged points may fail to deliver health benefits. What other precautions should be taken during massage? Let's explore them one by one.
5 Key Wellness Massage Points
Zhongwan (CV12): Located at the midpoint between the nipples, above the sternum. Belongs to the Ren Meridian and is a convergence point for the pericardium meridian's energy. Additionally, the body's vital energy (Zongqi) converges here.Shanzhong regulates qi, opens the chest, descends qi, and unblocks meridians. It is commonly used to treat heart palpitations, shortness of breath, chest tightness, chest pain, breast hyperplasia, cough, asthma, and other heart and lung conditions. Rub back and forth with the heel of your palm until warmth penetrates the area.
Sanyinjiao (SP6): Located three cun above the highest point of the medial malleolus on the inner calf, at the posterior border of the medial tibia. This is a primary point for treating gynecological disorders. Women, due to menstruation, childbirth, and lactation, rely heavily on blood while also being prone to blood depletion. Consequently, they are susceptible to emotional agitation, stagnation of liver qi, and deficiency of liver blood.Sanyinjiao regulates liver and spleen functions while nourishing blood, commonly treating irregular menstruation, metrorrhagia, dysmenorrhea, amenorrhea, leukorrhea, postpartum abdominal pain, habitual miscarriage, and lactation deficiency. Massage daily 50–100 times until a mild aching sensation is felt.
Zusanli: Located on the outer calf, diagonally below the knee cap.Zusanli is a vital point for stomach disorders and overall physical fortification. It can be used for nearly all gastrointestinal ailments—such as superficial gastritis, erosive gastritis, atrophic gastritis, and enteritis—whenever symptoms like stomach pain, bloating, acid reflux, heartburn, hiccups, constipation, or diarrhea occur. The recommended method is to press and rub the point 50 to 100 times daily, aiming for a sensation of mild soreness and fullness.
Yongquan (KI1): Located in the depression of the sole. Regular massage aids in treating sore throat, headache, dizziness, and hypertension. As the most sensitive point, stimulating it has special effects of opening orifices, reviving from fainting, restoring yang, and awakening the mind. If someone suddenly collapses and loses consciousness, apply strong stimulation to this point by pressing and rubbing 50–100 times.
Guanyuan: Located three cun below the navel, this point is clinically used to treat urinary and reproductive system disorders such as enuresis, impotence, diarrhea, vaginal discharge, infertility, amenorrhea, and postpartum abdominal pain.Apply friction until warmth penetrates, 1-2 times daily; or moxibustion for 10-15 minutes per session, once daily.
What principles and precautions should be followed during massage?
Principles of Massage for Wellness
Physical and Mental Relaxation: Maintain focused attention during massage while keeping a calm and composed state of mind. Avoid tension throughout the body, achieving complete relaxation of both mind and body.
Accurate Point Location: Master the methods for locating and manipulating common acupoints to ensure precise point selection and correct technique.
Appropriate Pressure: Insufficient pressure fails to provide adequate stimulation, while excessive force causes fatigue and may damage the skin.
Gradual Progression: Start with fewer massage techniques, gradually increase pressure intensity, and progressively expand the number of acupoints treated.
Persistence: Whether used for wellness maintenance or chronic disease management, massage therapy does not yield immediate results. Effects typically manifest gradually over time, requiring confidence, patience, and perseverance.
Key Considerations for Wellness Massage
Massage direction should align with muscle fibers: Follow the natural growth direction of muscles with gentle, rhythmic, and patient strokes. Wrinkles form at right angles to muscle fibers, so hands should move perpendicular to wrinkles—meaning along muscle lines. For horizontal wrinkles, massage vertically; for vertical wrinkles, massage horizontally.
Fingers used for massage: Employ the middle and ring fingers to gently trace circles on the skin, applying pressure so light it barely registers. Maintain a rhythmic motion and avoid excessive friction on the epidermis.
