Proper breathing techniques to alleviate labor pain

Some women scream loudly during labor contractions, believing shouting brings relief. In reality, loud screaming during childbirth is counterproductive. It depletes energy and causes intestinal gas buildup, hindering cervical dilation and fetal descent.
The correct approach involves understanding the labor process, alleviating mental tension, resting during contractions, and maintaining regular meals and hydration to preserve physical strength. This not only facilitates delivery but also significantly enhances pain tolerance. For unbearable discomfort, the following techniques may provide relief:
(1) Deep Breathing
During a contraction, inhale deeply through the nose, then exhale slowly through the mouth. Repeat 10 times per minute. Pause during the interval between contractions to rest briefly, then resume the breathing pattern when the next contraction begins.
(2) Massage
Combining massage with deep breathing enhances effectiveness. While inhaling, gently massage from the sides of the lower abdomen toward the center. While exhaling, massage from the center outward. Match the massage rhythm to your breathing pace. You may also lightly massage uncomfortable areas like the lower back or pubic symphysis.
(3) Pressure Relief
While breathing deeply, apply pressure with your fists to the lower back or pubic symphysis.
(4) Gentle Movement
If all is normal and with the doctor's approval, the mother may walk around gently, rest leaning against a chair, or stand for a while to help alleviate pain.
