Ultrasonic scaling is currently the most popular and widely adopted dental cleaning method, offering excellent teeth whitening results. To help you better understand ultrasonic scaling, here are pre- and post-procedure considerations.
Also known as professional teeth cleaning, ultrasonic scaling uses high-frequency vibrations to remove tartar and plaque. When performed correctly, it causes minimal damage to tooth surfaces.Scaling is a fundamental treatment for periodontal disease. It eliminates pathogenic factors, reduces gum inflammation, enhances dental aesthetics, and promotes oral comfort.
Pre-Treatment Considerations for Ultrasonic Scaling
1. Ultrasonic scaling is contraindicated for patients with pacemakers, blood disorders such as acute leukemia or aplastic anemia, or HIV/AIDS.Patients with uncontrolled diabetes, hypertension, or acute periodontal abscesses should not undergo scaling. 2. Before starting ultrasonic scaling, have the patient rinse with hydrogen peroxide and apply 1% iodine tincture to disinfect the treatment area. Thoroughly sterilize the handpiece and working tip of the ultrasonic scaler to prevent cross-infection.
3. Turn on the main unit and adjust the power setting. Use high power for thick, hard calculus; medium or low power for thin or minimal deposits. Upon pressing the foot switch, water mist will spray from the handpiece, indicating ultrasonic vibration has started. During scaling, hold the handpiece like a pen and gently contact the calculus at an angle less than 15°, moving it back and forth to break and dislodge calculus using ultrasonic vibration.
Post-Procedure Considerations for Ultrasonic Scaling
1. The tip of the ultrasonic scaler lacks cutting or grinding capabilities. It does not perform abrasive actions during treatment and will not damage tooth hard tissue.
2. Eating is generally unaffected after ultrasonic scaling. However, due to the structure of teeth—specifically the thin cementum at the tooth neck—some individuals may experience sensitivity post-cleaning. This is more pronounced in cases with heavier tartar buildup and more severe periodontal inflammation. Such sensitivity is typically transient and subsides quickly once the stimulus is removed. Special treatment is usually unnecessary, and symptoms often resolve gradually within 2 weeks to 1 month. For severe cases affecting eating, desensitizing treatment may be considered.
3. After ultrasonic scaling, the primary focus is on maintaining good oral hygiene through proper brushing techniques, flossing, and using interdental brushes to control plaque formation.
Post-cleaning care is crucial. Though teeth are strong, neglecting maintenance can lead to damage. Toothaches are excruciating—as the saying goes, "Toothache isn't a disease, but it feels like one." Cherish your teeth through proper care and whitening. This not only enhances chewing function but also preserves your beautiful smile.
