Misconception 1: Liposuction leads to significant weight loss.
In reality, localized fat removal has minimal impact on overall weight, as adipose tissue is far lighter than other bodily tissues. While full-body liposuction may result in slight weight reduction, most individuals experience little to no change post-surgery. A small percentage may even gain weight. However, regardless of weight, patients experience significant body contour improvement post-liposuction. They appear less bulky and more proportionate. Thus, liposuction primarily enhances body shape rather than weight reduction.
Misconception 2: Liposuction can be performed on any fatty area of the body.
Certain body regions prohibit or restrict liposuction due to critical nerve and blood vessel distribution.
The most common areas for liposuction include: the abdomen, buttocks, hips, and thighs; the upper limbs; the lower jaw, calves, and ankles; the face and neck; and additionally, conditions like breast hypertrophy and localized obesity caused by lipomas.
Misconception 3: Liposuction is a completely safe procedure with no complications.
While liposuction delivers effective weight reduction, it inevitably carries potential complications:
Pigmentation changes: This occurs when excessive thinning of the skin layer during suction causes ischemia, particularly common on calves and abdomen. Pigmentation typically fades within six months post-surgery.
Numbness and abnormal sensations in the treated area: Post-surgery, skin sensation in the liposuctioned areas is inevitably affected, leading to numbness and abnormal sensations like occasional pins-and-needles or crawling sensations. These typically resolve gradually within 1 to 3 months after surgery.
Post-operative irregularities: Liposuction does not achieve absolute uniformity, so some unevenness is inevitable and largely depends on the surgeon's technique. Mild irregularities are normal and can be gradually smoothed by wearing compression garments and performing appropriate massage for 1–3 months. Severe irregularities persisting beyond 3–6 months may require revision liposuction.
Wound infection: This may occur if negative pressure is not interrupted during cannula insertion/removal, exacerbating wound trauma.
Skin flap necrosis: Excessive subcutaneous fat removal during surgery can compromise skin blood supply, potentially causing blisters, necrosis, and scarring. Surgeon skill is critical in preventing this complication.
Chronic pain: This may result from rough surgical manipulation, poorly designed incisions, or subcutaneous scar tissue proliferation. It typically manifests as radiating pain, often worsening at night. Treatment options include local nerve blocks or scar tissue release and excision.
Misconception 4: I need liposuction on my waist, abdomen, buttocks, thighs, and calves, but I find it inconvenient to have separate procedures. Can all areas be treated in one session?
Liposuction is physically demanding for surgeons and requires complete concentration. Even minor errors can harm patients. Therefore, liposuction procedures are typically limited to 2–3 hours. This practice not only protects the surgeon's stamina but also prioritizes patient safety.
All surgeries involve trauma, and longer procedures increase the risk of complications such as infection. Consequently, prolonged surgeries pose significant potential dangers for patients. For safety reasons, it is advisable to schedule procedures separately whenever possible.
Misconception 5: I have excessive fat, so I want the doctor to remove as much as possible to achieve a more beautiful figure.
The volume of fat removed must be tailored to the individual patient's circumstances and cannot be generalized. More is not necessarily better. Higher removal volumes increase the likelihood of complications, so the amount extracted should be carefully controlled.
Currently, the standard limit for liposuction volume is around 3000 milliliters. For heavier patients, this can be moderately increased to 4000 milliliters, with 5000 milliliters being the absolute safety threshold. Patients requiring larger volumes need not rush for immediate results. Gradual, staged liposuction can achieve excellent body contouring while ensuring safety.
Misconception 6: After liposuction, I can eat and drink whatever I want without gaining weight.
Fat in many body areas exists in two layers: deep and superficial. Removing deep fat while preserving 0.5-1cm of superficial fat prevents localized rebound. Rebound occurs when insufficient fat is removed or when patients fail to maintain regular diet and exercise after surgery. Some mistakenly believe they can overeat without gaining weight anywhere after liposuction, only to regain weight post-surgery and return to their previous weight. However, weight gain typically occurs most in the arms and back.
Misconception 7: Liposuction is completely painless.
Absolutely painless surgery does not exist. Regardless of the liposuction technique used, anesthesia is required. Pain during the procedure may occur due to the injection of anesthetic, insufficient or uneven anesthesia coverage, or low anesthetic concentration. Under normal circumstances, pain is not significant within the first 24 hours post-surgery. Subsequently, the skin may feel sore and swollen, with pain intensifying during localized exertion. Generally, discomfort begins to gradually lessen starting on the third day post-surgery and slowly subsides.
