In recent years, the rapid expansion of the cosmetic surgery industry has been accompanied by a surge in procedures and a corresponding rise in surgical complications. Cases where cosmetic enhancements result in disfigurement are increasingly common, with isolated incidents even leading to fatalities. In response to this situation, some insurance companies have introduced cosmetic surgery insurance policies. But are these policies truly reliable?
It is understood that cosmetic surgery is typically excluded from traditional accident insurance policies. For instance, one accident insurance clause states: "Accidents resulting from cosmetic surgery, bacterial, or viral infections are excluded from coverage."
Regarding cosmetic surgery risks, major insurers in the market do not offer related coverage. However, numerous internet insurance customization platforms have partnered with insurance companies to launch cosmetic surgery insurance, often bundled as packages with cosmetic procedures.
These policies typically cost around 100 yuan, with coverage primarily focused on the face. Due to the low premium, the compensation amounts are also modest.Taking one product as an example, besides a 50,000 yuan death benefit, it covers: - "Severe levator muscle issues causing difficulty closing or opening eyes" (5,000 yuan payout) - "Irreversible facial nerve damage resulting in facial paralysis" (20,000 yuan payout) - "Symmetrical eye surgery causing a 0.3 cm difference in eye width or scarring exceeding 0.5 cm² in the surgical area" (5,000 yuan payout)
This means that even irreversible facial paralysis resulting from failed cosmetic surgery would yield a maximum payout of ¥20,000.
Some consumers argue that while such cosmetic surgery insurance offers some protection, its narrow coverage scope and low compensation amounts fail to provide adequate financial compensation. Currently, it remains a "chicken rib"—something neither satisfying to keep nor worth discarding.
