Myopia is no small matter. Without proper eye care, vision will steadily deteriorate. Data reveals that over 90% of college students suffer from myopia, underscoring the urgent need for students to protect their eyes and prevent further vision loss. Over 90% of College Students Are Myopic June 6th marks National Eye Care Day. According to a previous World Health Organization report, China has 600 million myopia sufferers, making it the world's most myopic nation. In 2019, the overall myopia rate among Chinese children and adolescents was 50.2%. The latest data shows that in 2018, the overall myopia rate among children and adolescents nationwide reached 53.6%, with high school students at 81% and college students exceeding 90%. Moreover, myopia is irreversible.
The data reveals that myopia is prevalent not only among college students but also among high school students, children, and adolescents.
For many, myopia is linked to poor lifestyle habits. To prevent myopia, it's essential to understand its causes, enabling effective eye protection:
1. Inadequate viewing distance
Many people watch TV or read at distances too close. Many cases of myopia are linked to poor lifestyle habits. To prevent myopia, it's essential to understand its causes, enabling effective eye protection:
1. Inadequate viewing distance
Many people habitually watch TV, use mobile phones, or read books at extremely close range to the screen or page. This practice significantly increases the risk of developing myopia. Watching television at close range is particularly damaging to vision.Prolonged close-up TV viewing can easily cause myopia, and continuing this habit after developing myopia will further worsen vision.
2. Unsuitable environments
Some students enjoy reading in sunlight, thinking it's pleasant to read while getting some sun. However, intense sunlight is unsuitable for reading. Similarly, reading on a phone in sunlight is inadvisable, as the screen's light continuously stimulates the eyes.
Equally problematic is reading or using phones in overly dim environments. In low light, the eyes strain to focus, and prolonged fatigue gradually diminishes visual acuity. This leads to eye strain, causing visual fatigue that impairs visual function. 4. Insufficient Sleep Many students are extremely diligent, dedicating extensive hours daily to studying—rising early and retiring late. This deprives them of adequate sleep, resulting in fatigue the following day.Not only does the brain fail to rest adequately, but the eyes also bear an excessive burden, potentially impairing vision and worsening myopia.
1. Consistently perform eye exercises
Schools typically play eye exercise music during a designated time each afternoon. Students are advised to seize this opportunity to thoroughly perform the exercises. Consistent practice with proper form helps alleviate visual fatigue. This practice is highly effective in preventing myopia, so students should avoid distractions like playing during these exercises. 2. Use electronic devices reasonably Electronic devices like smartphones and computers are ubiquitous today. Many students now own phones and use computers for online classes and homework. Consequently, students frequently interact with electronic devices.
Students should plan their screen time wisely. For children, each session should not exceed 20 minutes, and daily usage should be limited to one hour. Prolonged screen time causes excessive eye strain and may trigger myopia.
We especially advise against giving electronic devices to children under two years old to minimize potential harm.
