Whether it's back pain, bone discomfort, or poor sleep—many people treat calcium as a "cure-all." Yet a new study warns that excessively high blood calcium levels may increase the risk of developing cirrhosis.
Excessive Calcium Supplementation Linked to Cirrhosis
Researchers analyzed biochemical indicators—including serum calcium concentrations and hepatitis virus antibodies—in 281 cirrhosis patients and 562 control subjects. Results revealed significantly higher blood calcium levels in the cirrhosis group (1.81 ± 0.84 mmol/L) compared to controls (1.65 ± 0.79 mmol/L). This correlation was positive, meaning higher blood calcium concentrations were associated with greater cirrhosis risk. Specifically, individuals with the highest calcium levels faced potentially double the risk of developing cirrhosis.
Researchers noted that the precise mechanism linking blood calcium levels to cirrhosis remains unclear, though it may involve impaired liver metabolic function. However, this new study cautions that nutritional supplementation can be counterproductive—excessive calcium intake may do more harm than good.
So how should calcium supplementation be approached?
① Identify target groups. Among children, this includes premature infants, twins, infants aged 6 months to 3 years, and adolescents undergoing puberty. Premature infants and twins often have lower birth weights but face a rapid growth spurt in the first few months after birth, making them prone to relative calcium deficiency.Infants aged 6 months to 3 years and adolescents in puberty represent two major growth peaks in human development. Adolescents, in particular, require more calcium than adults and also have increased needs for other nutrients.
② Supplement dosage. The principle should be: "Supplement only what is deficient." Daily calcium supplementation should be based on dietary adjustments and aligned with age-specific recommended intake standards.Infants exclusively breastfed or formula-fed from 0–6 months require no supplemental calcium. Formula-fed infants aged 0–6 months should receive 100–200 mg of calcium daily. Infants and toddlers aged 7–36 months should receive 100–200 mg of calcium daily. Children over 4 years old should receive 400 mg of calcium daily.
③ Administration Methods. Generally, dividing the same dose of calcium supplements into smaller, more frequent doses improves absorption compared to a single large dose. It is best taken between meals. Taking calcium supplements with fruit juice enhances absorption. Taking them before bedtime also improves absorption. However, calcium supplements should not be taken with foods high in protein, oxalic acid, or phytic acid, as these can impair calcium absorption.Calcium supplementation should not be taken on an empty stomach. Calcium supplements dissociate into calcium ions under the influence of stomach acid for absorption and utilization. Food consumed after meals promotes gastric acid secretion. Increased gastric acid facilitates the breakdown and digestion of calcium supplements in the stomach, enhancing their absorption and utilization by the body.
Here are several cooking methods for calcium-rich foods:
1.Crispy Yellow Croaker Fish. Method: Heat a wok, line the bottom with scallions and ginger, arrange 10cm-long yellow croakers on top, add vinegar, and simmer over low heat until tender—even the head and bones become crispy. This transforms the entire fish into an edible calcium supplement.
2. Pressure-Cooked Chicken Dumplings. This method thoroughly tenderizes chicken meat and bones. Encourage your baby to chew and swallow the softened cartilage, which also provides calcium. Note: Both methods are unsuitable for babies under 2 years old. Most children develop 20 baby teeth and sufficient chewing ability by age 2.5, making these dishes digestible and beneficial.Bone broth is another option. Wash large beef bones, crack or break them, then add to cold water. Bring to a boil, skim off scum, add scallions, ginger, and cooking wine. Simmer over low heat for an extended period.
