In vehicles, drivers often slump into seats, causing the spine to curve into a C-shape. This poor posture overstretches lower back ligaments and compresses nearby spinal nerves, leading to back pain. Shift your hips backward to align the spine over the hips, straighten the lower back, and make this a habitual posture.Alternatively, place a 3-inch-thick cushion under your lower back while seated. 2. Avoid prolonged sitting Driving keeps your body rigid for extended periods, easily leading to poor circulation and back pain. To counter this, break up long stretches of sitting. If possible, get out of the car every hour to stretch your limbs.During traffic jams or waiting at lights, why not play soothing music in the car? Sit up straight, chest out, stomach tucked in, and use the time to do some health exercises. 3. Apply heat to the Yangguang point on the lower back Long-distance drivers often experience lower back soreness and stiffness. This is caused by maintaining the same posture for extended periods or sitting in a seat with an improperly angled backrest.Traditional Chinese massage techniques can alleviate such discomfort, such as stimulating the Yangguang point on the lower back.
As the name suggests, the Yangguang point is located on the lower back, in the depression below the spinous process of the fourth lumbar vertebra along the midline of the back. It is a commonly used acupoint for treating lower back conditions. Those experiencing back discomfort after a road trip can lie face down on a bed and apply a warm towel to the Yaoyangguan point for 20–30 minutes. Alternatively, have a friend or family member massage this point for 3–10 minutes per session to help alleviate back pain.
4. Dietary Therapy
Consuming foods rich in vitamin C is beneficial for back pain. Additionally, supplementing with fat-soluble vitamins such as B6, B1, B12, vitamin D, and folic acid helps prevent deficiencies. Incorporate appropriate amounts of rice bran, wheat bran, carrots, cod liver oil, yeast, fresh fruits, and vegetables into your diet.
5. Massage Therapy
Massage stimulates muscles and tissues, promotes blood circulation, accelerates metabolism, and simultaneously relaxes muscles and nerves. It aids bone marrow and muscles in absorbing nutrients and vitamins. Targeted massage and corrective techniques can also reshape posture, alleviate muscle tension, and relieve spasms.
Acute Lower Back Pain Treatment Methods
If acute lower back pain occurs, immediately adopt a comfortable position and rest quietly. Options include lying flat, curling up like a shrimp, or hugging your knees. Apply a damp cloth or cold towel to the painful area to relieve discomfort. Continue cold compresses for about 3 days as needed, avoiding showers or baths during this period.
80%-90% of acute lower back pain stems from muscle pain. Muscles are covered by a substance called the "fascia," similar to the thin white membrane found on chicken meat.During acute lower back pain, sudden muscle contraction damages the fascia, triggering fasciitis and resulting in pain. This type of pain typically resolves within about a week. During this period, avoid placing pressure on the lower back. Recovery from acute lower back pain generally takes 1-2 weeks. However, the muscles in the affected area lose elasticity, making them prone to recurring pain if not properly cared for. Therefore, when the back is pain-free, it's important to exercise the back muscles to promote blood circulation in the lower back and help eliminate accumulated waste products.
Chronic Lower Back Pain Massage Techniques
Kneading: Sit upright. Place both hands with fingers together on the left and right sides of the lower back, palms facing inward. Gently knead up and down until warmth develops.
Rolling: Make fists with both hands and place them on the waist. Roll and massage outward in a circular motion, moving from bottom to top and back down repeatedly. Coordinate with tilting the head forward and backward.
Pushing: Rub hands together until warm, then place them overlapping over the center of the lumbar spine. Push downward 30-50 times until warmth develops locally.
Pressing: Place hands on hips with thumbs pressing into the waist points. Apply firm pressure while rotating and kneading, first clockwise then counterclockwise for 36 rotations each.
Grasp: Sit with legs extended forward, knees bent, or in an upright position. Use both hands to grasp and release the lumbar muscles 15-20 times.
Tap: Make fists with palms facing outward. Lightly tap the waist without causing pain, alternating sides 30 times each.
Scraping: Place both hands on your waist with thumbs forward, pressing firmly against the sides. Using the pads of the remaining four fingers, scrape outward along the skin from the waist points toward the lower back. Perform simultaneously with both hands, scraping 36 times each.
