Some claim running cures all ailments—an exaggeration—yet consistent long-term running does bring profound positive changes throughout the body. Let's explore the benefits of running.
Jogging Extends Lifespan
According to a U.S. report, a large-scale study on exercise and mortality conducted by Iowa State University, the University of South Carolina, and the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Louisiana reveals that just 5 minutes of daily jogging significantly reduces the risk of premature death.
The data for this latest study came from the extensive database of the Cooper Clinic and its research institute in Dallas. Researchers selected over 55,000 healthy volunteers aged 18 to 100 from this database, whose clinic visits dated back at least 15 years. Within this group, 24% reported running, though their typical distances and speeds varied greatly.Researchers then examined mortality records for these adults. During the approximately 15-year follow-up period, nearly 3,500 participants died, with many fatalities attributed to heart disease.
Results published in the Journal of the American Heart Association indicate that runners experienced significantly lower disease incidence compared to non-runners.Even after accounting for factors like being overweight or smoking, runners had a 30% lower overall risk of death compared to non-runners, and a 45% lower risk of dying from heart disease. Even overweight or smoking runners had a lower risk of premature death than non-runners, regardless of the latter's weight or smoking habits. Overall, runners lived about 3 years longer than those who never ran.Notably, running duration matters—benefits accumulate regardless of how long or short the runs are.
Six Physical Benefits of Consistent Running
1. Eyes: Long-distance runners spend about an hour daily gazing into the distance, providing essential relaxation for the eyes. If you have school-aged children, encouraging daily running can significantly reduce their risk of developing myopia.
2. Neck, Shoulders, Spine: Those who frequently sit at computers often experience neck and shoulder issues. Proper running posture requires a straight, relaxed back. Long-term adherence significantly improves discomfort in the neck and shoulders.
3. Heart: Consistent running builds a strong heart and cardiovascular system. It increases maximum oxygen uptake while delivering significantly more oxygen to all organs, naturally enhancing their performance. Additionally, middle- and long-distance running accelerates blood circulation, ensuring adequate coronary artery blood supply to the heart muscle and thereby preventing various heart diseases.Lower-body movement also promotes venous blood return to the heart and prevents blood clot formation in veins.
4. Blood: With a robust cardiovascular system, runners exhibit superior blood quality compared to non-runners. The body's adaptive changes to long-term endurance running improve metabolism and reduce blood lipid and cholesterol levels.
5. Lungs and Respiratory System: Long-term endurance running strengthens lung function and increases lung capacity—regular, sustained running develops respiratory muscles, enlarges tidal volume, and enhances pulmonary performance. Personally, I used to suffer from seasonal rhinitis every autumn, but since starting running this year, it hasn't returned. I wonder if there's a connection?
6. Liver:During a physical exam, the doctor called an intern over and said: "Look at this—this is a healthy liver with clearly defined vascular patterns. Such cases are rare nowadays." Running effectively eliminates fatty liver, a fact verified by many runners.
