Persistent coughing may signal lung cancer!
Autumn and winter are peak seasons for lung cancer. Many patients initially present with coughing, phlegm production, and low-grade fever. Most dismiss these symptoms as a common cold, leading to ineffective treatment. By the time they seek further care, the cancer has often progressed to intermediate or advanced stages. Experts urge heightened vigilance, particularly for individuals over 40 with a history of long-term smoking or exposure to secondhand smoke.
Characteristics of cancer-related cough:
The nature of a cancer-related cough depends on the type of lung cancer involved.Lung cancer is broadly categorized into two types: central and peripheral. Peripheral lung cancer often develops in terminal bronchioles, with patients rarely experiencing coughing in the early stages. Instead, chest pain is more common. Central lung cancer, however, presents with coughing earlier, typically starting as a pressing sensation or paroxysmal irritating dry cough. It may produce little to no sputum, or a small amount of frothy mucus, sometimes streaked with blood. The intensity of coughing correlates with the tumor's location. Larger bronchi contain more sensory receptors, making them more susceptible to tumor irritation and triggering stronger coughing. Consequently, early detection is challenging, and symptoms often appear only in advanced stages.
Beyond coughing, lung cancer patients may exhibit the following symptoms that should not be overlooked:
1. Sudden weight loss.
2. Chest tightness, wheezing, shortness of breath, and fever.
3. Compression or invasion of nerves causing paralysis of the diaphragm on the same side.
4. Compression or invasion of the recurrent laryngeal nerve causing vocal cord paralysis and hoarseness.
5. Horner's syndrome.
Traditional Chinese medicine experts believe that deficiency of vital energy and dysfunction of internal organs are the primary internal factors leading to tumor development. Once lung cancer occurs, failure to treat it promptly can further damage lung qi and deplete lung yin, weakening the body's vital energy and accelerating the spread and progression of the tumor. In the early stages, when the tumor is small and vital energy remains strong (with the vital energy dominant and the pathogenic factors weak), treatment often follows the principle of prioritizing attack, or major attack with minor tonification, or attacking first followed by regulation. In the middle stage, as the tumor progresses to a certain extent, pathogenic factors become dominant while vital energy is also impaired, often reaching a state of equilibrium. Treatment should then adopt a principle of both attacking and tonifying. In the late stage, the condition worsens with significant depletion of vital energy and dominance of pathogenic factors. Treatment should primarily focus on tonification, or follow the principles of major tonification with minor attack, or tonification followed by attack—that is, strengthening the vital energy to expel pathogenic factors.
Data indicates that lung cancer patients in China predominantly comprise middle-aged and elderly individuals. At diagnosis, most cases are already at the middle or late stages. At this point, deficiency of vital energy is a common characteristic among patients. Therefore, TCM treatment should primarily focus on strengthening vital energy, with eliminating pathogens and resolving accumulations as supplementary. Strengthening vital energy involves supplementing deficiencies based on the patient's condition of qi, blood, yin, and yang.Eliminating pathogens targets excess conditions like phlegm accumulation, qi stagnation, blood stasis, or heat toxins. In recent years, the therapeutic principle of "nourishing the healthy qi to naturally eliminate accumulations" has gained widespread recognition. Herbal treatment focuses on enhancing the body's immunity and intrinsic anti-cancer capacity, supplemented by anti-cancer herbs to control tumors and alleviate symptoms.
Herbs with anticancer properties:
1. Heat-clearing and toxin-resolving herbs:
Hedyotis diffusa, Scutellaria barbata, Rubus parvifolius, Sophora flavescens, Paris polyphylla, Solanum nigrum, Smilax glabra, Euphorbia humifusa, Fagopyrum tataricum root, Scutellaria baicalensis, Platycodon grandiflorus, etc.
2. Phlegm-Resolving and Hardness-Softening Herbs
Prunella vulgaris, raw Pinellia ternata, Cynanchum wilfordii, raw Ostrea, Trichosanthes kirilowii, Sargassum, Euphorbia humifusa, Laminaria japonica, etc.
3. Blood-Activating, Stasis-Resolving, and Mass-Dispersing Herbs
Cyperus rotundus, Curcuma zedoaria, Polygonum aviculare, Salvia miltiorrhiza, Artemisia argyi leaf, Eupatorium fortunei, Panax notoginseng, etc.
4. Other herbs
Smilax glabra, whole scorpion, centipede, mosquito-eating spider, iron tree leaf, hibiscus leaf, wild grapevine, ice ball seed, dung beetle larva, etc.
Coughing may seem minor, but it could signal serious illness. Those with persistent coughs should seek prompt medical evaluation to rule out lung cancer.
