No one wants to suffer from constipation. To overcome it, first understand its causes. Generally, constipation falls into three categories: First, slow gastrointestinal motility leading to constipation; Second, normal gastrointestinal motility but issues with the anus; The third type involves both slow gastrointestinal motility and anal issues. Knowing the causes, how should women manage constipation?
1. Women can increase dietary fiber intake. Once ingested, dietary fiber forms effective components for stool, reducing the likelihood of constipation.
2. Maintain adequate hydration, as water is essential for life. Insufficient fluid intake can contribute to constipation, so women should drink plenty of water daily.
3. Develop a consistent bowel routine. Even without the urge, visiting the restroom at scheduled times helps establish a biological feedback loop for regularity, preventing constipation.
4. Engage in moderate exercise. Walking, jogging, skipping rope, or aerobics are simple yet effective options.
Can Swimming Relieve Constipation for Women?
Some women enjoy swimming and consider it a potential remedy for constipation. However, compared to activities like running or aerobics, swimming is less effective. This is because water provides buoyancy, reducing the stimulation to the soles of the feet that triggers the gastrointestinal reflex—a key mechanism in running. Consequently, swimming offers limited relief for constipation.
What are the risks of chronic constipation for women?
1. Fecal matter fermenting and decomposing inside the body produces large amounts of harmful toxins. Consequently, women with long-term constipation are prone to acne, dark spots, and rashes, affecting their appearance. Additionally, toxins in the intestines can cause colonic edema, which impairs blood circulation in the lower body and contributes to weight gain.
2. Accumulated toxins in the intestines can cause bad breath and body odor. As constipation worsens and abdominal distension increases, it may also lead to nausea, loss of appetite, and a diminished sense of taste.
3. Constipation often causes irritability and restlessness. Over time, this can result in symptoms of neurasthenia. Furthermore, if constipation irritates pelvic muscles, it may trigger dysmenorrhea.
4. Chronic constipation often leads to anal and intestinal disorders like hemorrhoids, anal fissures, and rectal prolapse. In severe cases, persistent irritation of the intestinal mucosa may contribute to colorectal cancer. For women, prolonged constipation disrupts ovarian hormone and estrogen secretion, stimulating breast tissue and potentially causing breast hyperplasia or even breast cancer.
