In today's society, white-collar workers often remain glued to their desks due to heavy workloads. However, prolonged sitting poses significant health risks. Below, we explore the dangers of extended sitting and strategies to mitigate these hazards.
Harm 1 of Prolonged Sitting
Sitting for extended periods reduces blood flow to the brain, diminishing oxygen and nutrient supply. This exacerbates fatigue, insomnia, and memory decline while increasing the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease.
Harm 3 of Prolonged Sitting
Logically, sitting diligently at an office desk each day should burn significant mental and physical energy, making one feel hungry. Yet why, come mealtime, does one feel no appetite or hunger? This is the power of prolonged sitting.
Harm of Prolonged Sitting #4
Prolonged sitting causes chronic congestion in the venous plexus near the rectum, worsening blood stasis. This exacerbates hemorrhoids, leading to symptoms like rectal bleeding and anal fissures.
Harm of Prolonged Sitting #5
When calorie intake exceeds expenditure, fat accumulates in the body, causing weight gain.Obesity is a risk factor for numerous chronic diseases.
Harm of Prolonged Sitting #6
Maintaining a seated posture for extended periods places the body's full weight on the base of the spine. Combined with prolonged inactivity of the shoulders and neck, this can cause cervical stiffness. In severe cases, it may lead to spinal deformation, inducing kyphosis and bone spurs.
Harm #7 of Prolonged Sitting
Prolonged inactivity compresses the bladder meridian located in the buttocks and thighs, obstructing the flow of qi and blood. This disrupts bladder function. Since the kidney meridian is paired with the bladder meridian, it can trigger kidney dysfunction. This is the principle behind the saying, "Prolonged sitting harms the kidneys."
How to Avoid the Hazards of Prolonged Sitting
1. Set an Alarm
Use your phone's alarm to remind yourself to stand up and rest occasionally. Set the alarm and place it out of reach. When it goes off, you must get up to turn it off. This is your cue to try the following exercises.Super simple!
2. Plank Pose
We absolutely love this yoga pose. It quickly engages three major muscle groups simultaneously: your arms, legs, and core. Lie face down with legs together, forearms on the ground. Keep your arms perpendicular from shoulders to elbows, toes curled under to push upward.Engage your abs and lift your hips. Then push your body off the ground, keeping a straight line from your feet to your shoulders while keeping your neck in line with your spine. Hold this for 25 seconds—45 seconds is even better—up to a maximum of 2 minutes. Awesome!
3. Hit the Bathroom
Or head to the break room for a cup of coffee and a quick chat with a coworker about work. A short break can be incredibly beneficial.
4. Challenge Yourself
How far can you walk in two minutes and return to your desk on time?
5. Stair Climbing
Climbing stairs for three minutes burns 29 calories. Office or home staircases prove to be the most practical exercise equipment—right under your nose!
6.Don't sit in your chair
Working while seated on an exercise ball keeps your leg muscles, glutes, and core engaged. Take 10-15 minute breaks every hour, or do two sessions daily.
7. March in place
Put on your headphones? Stand up and start marching. Lift your knees high! March for one minute, then move on to the next exercise.
8. Stand up, sit down, and repeat
Keep your back straight with hands at your sides or held out in front (no leaning on the chair). Use your leg muscles and glutes to lift yourself off the seat, then slowly lower back down.Repeat this movement as many times as possible.
9. Maintain Standing Position
Standing requires 30% more energy than sitting. Consider using a standing desk—these are readily available on the market! Or try Dr. Mike's method: a treadmill!
10. At Home
Take breaks during commercial breaks.Prime-time commercials average 14-21 minutes per hour, giving you ample time to step away from your seat without missing your favorite shows. Closing Thoughts: Even when relaxing at home, avoid prolonged sitting. Spending all day in front of a computer isn't beneficial for your health. Get out for appropriate exercise and physical activity to counteract the risks of sedentary behavior.
