After several years on the throne, Wu Zetian's health began to decline. She suffered from persistent coughing and restlessness, struggling to focus during court sessions. The secret recipe was subsequently lost.Li Longji dispatched men to track down the officials involved in those affairs. Eventually, they found them in a remote mountain village.When Li Longji visited the village in search of the elixir, he discovered four or five centenarians living there. Remarkably, none of the villagers had ever suffered from serious illness. Upon inquiry, he learned that the officials from that era had secretly brought the secret formula for Autumn Pear Syrup back to their hometown and passed it down to their fellow villagers. From that time onward, the villagers had remained remarkably healthy, largely free from major ailments.Convinced of its efficacy, Li Longji secretly presented it to Empress Wu Zetian. Though initially skeptical, she observed its remarkable effects after several days of use and ordered imperial physicians to produce it in large quantities. Unexpectedly, the physicians modified the original formula, greatly enhancing its potency.
After taking the medicine, Empress Wu transformed completely. No longer restless and distracted, she grew increasingly adept at governing. Her reign during the Wu Zhou period was later praised by history as bridging the golden age of the Zhenguan era and ushering in the prosperity of the Kaiyuan era.Observing Empress Wu's renewed vigor and exceptional governance, many elderly ministers who had previously opposed her began to support her instead. She was deeply satisfied with this turn of events. Consequently, she favored Li Longji even more than before. From this point onward, with Empress Wu's backing, Li Longji's path became smooth sailing, laying the groundwork for his eventual overthrow of Emperor Zhongzong.
As the empress who ruled the Tang Dynasty for fifteen years, her greatest fears during that time—not as a ruler but as a woman—were not treacherous ministers or rebel armies plotting to seize the throne.
