In just over 20 days of July, 10 cases of fetal abnormalities were confirmed via ultrasound. Among these: 2 cases of hydrocephalus, 2 cases of anencephaly, 2 cases of visceral herniation, 2 cases of umbilical hernia, 1 case of brain tissue protrusion, and 1 case of multiple abnormalities including umbilical hernia combined with spina bifida.Regarding gestational age, the earliest diagnosis occurred at 3 months, while the latest was over 6 months. The mothers ranged in age from 24 to 28. This high incidence of fetal abnormalities has raised concerns among experts, who offer this advice: To ensure a healthy baby, prioritize premarital examinations as the first step in eugenics. Do not treat these screenings as a mere formality or seek connections to pass them, as such actions may jeopardize the health of the next generation.
Beyond unavoidable genetic mutations, fetal abnormalities can stem from environmental pollution, viruses, reproductive tract infections, dietary habits, and the season of conception.
Fetal abnormalities impose significant burdens on families and society while inflicting emotional and physical suffering on expectant mothers. To prevent such occurrences, intervention must begin at the source:
First, take premarital medical examinations seriously. Diseases identified during screening—such as hepatitis B and sexually transmitted infections—can compromise offspring health and cause fetal abnormalities. Pregnancy should only proceed after full recovery.
Second, prepare thoroughly before conception. Avoid unplanned pregnancies by pursuing prepared, planned pregnancies. Undergo necessary screenings like rubella testing. Rubella infection can cause congenital heart disease and deafness in the fetus, preventable through vaccination. Take folic acid supplements like Siliang tablets during the first trimester to prevent neural tube defects.
Third, avoid conceiving during spring and winter when viral activity is higher. Fetal malformation rates are significantly higher in pregnancies conceived during these seasons compared to summer and fall.
Fourth, establish a perinatal health record immediately after conception and attend regular check-ups. Perform Down syndrome screening between 14-20 weeks and ultrasound scans before 28 weeks. These tests can detect fetal abnormalities early in pregnancy.
Fifth, prevent reproductive tract infections. These infections are primarily caused by unprotected sexual activity. Practice safe sex, seek prompt treatment for confirmed infections, and consult a doctor immediately if you notice abnormal vaginal discharge. Do not avoid medication or delay seeking medical care due to pregnancy.
