How to identify genetically modified foods

At the 2010 Shanghai World Expo, China's Ministry of Science and Technology classified genetically modified ingredients alongside pathogens and toxic substances as the three major prohibited food items posing threats to life and health. The ministry mobilized national scientific resources to develop GM detection equipment, preventing foreign visitors from accidentally consuming GM foods. This action underscores one crucial point: large-scale promotion of GM crops in China is no longer a matter of perception—everyone is fully aware of what they are doing.Whether proponents of forced adoption or those compelled to accept it—all know the outcome.
The safety of genetically modified foods remains highly controversial, with no international consensus reached to date. Having existed for only a little over a decade, many long-term effects remain unknown. Consuming genetically modified foods is akin to treating oneself as a lab rat, carrying unpredictable risks.Therefore, the precautionary principle should be applied to GM foods. Until their long-term safety is fully established, GM ingredients should not be used in food production.
While most people still refuse to eat GM foods, they are now ubiquitous. We cannot predict the catastrophic consequences this technology may bring, but we know the damage will be irreversible.
The Chinese Ministry of Agriculture has approved the cultivation of the following GM crops: bell peppers, tomatoes, potatoes; and staple crops including corn and rice.
It is said that crops such as wheat, sweet potatoes, and peanuts may be approved in the future.
Imported GM foods include soybean oil, canola oil, and soybeans.
Currently, only peanut oil is non-GMO.
Foods from McDonald's and KFC are almost entirely GMO.
Feed for pigs, cattle, and chickens consists of GMO corn and GMO soybeans.
GMO soybean oil is extracted using No. 6 light gasoline.
Be wary of several major "GMO soybean oil" brands!
1. Jinlongyu brand: soybean oil, salad oil, blended oil, etc. Market share approx. 40%. Owned by Singapore's Wilmar International (controlled by the Chinese-Malaysian Kuok family) + U.S. ADM;
2. Fulinmen brand: soybean oil, salad oil, blended oil, etc.Approximately 30% market share, funded by state-owned COFCO Group + Singapore's Wilmar International + U.S. ADM;
Additionally, hundreds of regional edible oil brands currently exist in China. Most use genetically modified soybean oil to reduce costs, though their market share is limited. When purchasing, carefully check labels for statements like "This product is made from genetically modified soybean oil, Brazilian soybeans, solvent extraction," etc. Exercise caution when buying.
Knowledge for identifying genetically modified foods:
1. Soybeans
Non-GMO soybeans: Oval-shaped with a slightly flattened profile. The navel is light brown. Beans vary in size. Soy milk extracted from them is milky white.
Genetically Modified Soybeans: Round and perfectly spherical. The navel is yellow or yellowish-brown. Beans are nearly uniform in size. Soy milk made from these beans has a slight yellow tint, and tofu or other products made from them also appear slightly yellow.
Simple Test Method: Genetically modified soybeans do not sprout! Test with water! Native soybeans will sprout after three days of soaking! Genetically modified soybeans will not sprout; they merely swell.
From this sprouting test, one can observe that these genetically modified soybeans are one-time fruits. Their embryos lack essential life activity, thus lacking the ability to perpetuate offspring.It's akin to a person who can conceive normally but experiences stillbirths every time—meaning the continuation of life ends there. If humans consume various genetically modified foods on a large scale over the long term, the harmful GM fragments will inevitably subtly influence and alter our normal genes. Declining immunity, the emergence of strange diseases, or even loss of fertility would all be logical consequences.
2. Carrots
Non-GMO carrots: Surface is uneven and irregularly shaped, typically not straight. They taper from thicker at the top to thinner at the bottom, with the top bulging outward.
GMO carrots: Surface is relatively smooth and usually straight. The bottom end is sometimes thicker than the middle section, and the top is concave inward.
Note: Carrots are only available in autumn and winter; those sold in summer are typically genetically modified.
3. Potatoes
Non-GMO potatoes: Appear unattractive, usually darker in color, with pitted surfaces and irregular skin pigmentation. After peeling, their surface quickly darkens, while the flesh remains white.
Genetically modified potatoes: Smooth surface with shallow pits, lighter color. After peeling, no noticeable discoloration occurs.
Testing method: Peel first, observe changes, then decide whether to consume.
4. Corn
Genetically modified corn: Sweet and crisp, plump kernels, uniform shape, similar kernel density at both ends.
5. Rice
Hubei is the only region in China with legal cultivation rights for GM rice. Be wary of slender, highly polished grains, which can be mistaken for Northeast China's "Long Grain Fragrant" rice. Always verify the origin when purchasing.
6. Tomatoes
GM tomatoes: Bright red and visually appealing, with firm flesh that resists cracking.

According to the "Administrative Measures for the Labeling of Genetically Modified Agricultural Organisms," GM foods must be labeled. However, these labels are often hidden—as small as 1.8 millimeters tall and tucked in the least conspicuous spots—but they can always be found with careful inspection.
(2) Most tomatoes and papayas in supermarkets are genetically modified; avoid purchasing them.In terms of safety and quality, fruits from individual vendors are far superior to supermarket options. Avoid blindly trusting foreign-owned supermarkets—their products often look appealing but taste poor, with too many substandard or counterfeit items.
(3) Corn is the most widely and extensively genetically modified crop. Exercise extreme caution when purchasing any corn-based products, including supermarket corn muffins.
(4) Genetically modified wheat kernels are white, translucent, and shiny, with fully vitreous kernels. They belong to the hard, high-gluten, premium bread wheat variety. The specially superior genetically modified 9506 wheat was introduced in Anhui in 2008. Flour often contains bleaching agents and talcum powder mixed in, making it even harder to identify.
(5) China has secretly pursued rice GMOs for several years, with small quantities entering the market. Exercise particular caution with rice that is unusually long, slender, and glossy.Northeast China rice currently contains no GMOs and is safe for consumption. Always check the packaging: rice from Heilongjiang, Jilin, and Liaoning provinces is japonica rice, characterized by short, round grains. This differs fundamentally from the medium-long grain varieties of GM rice (e.g., BT Shanyou 63) cultivated in Hubei and Hunan provinces, making it easier to identify. Additionally, Thailand prohibits GM crops, so its rice is safe.
(6) Millet, oats, buckwheat, and sorghum are minor grain crops that have not yet been genetically modified. Peanuts are a unique Chinese product with no known GM varieties, and sweet potatoes remain non-GM.
