Our bodies require seven essential nutrients for normal functioning:
1. Water
Water is vital for sustaining life, participating in bodily metabolism, and serving as a key component of cells. While humans can survive about ten days without food, they can only endure a few days without water. Adequate hydration facilitates chemical reactions within the body and maintains stable body temperature.
2. Protein
All human tissues and organs are composed of cells, whose primary structural component is protein. A key function of protein is forming vital active substances such as enzymes, hormones, transport proteins, signaling proteins, immunoglobulins, and collagen.Soy products like tofu, soy milk, soybeans, peas, and broad beans, along with dairy products such as milk and cheese, are rich in protein. Additionally, gluten, wheat germ, sesame seeds, and rice also contain protein.
3. Fats
Many people, especially women, fear fats. However, fats are essential nutrients for our bodies, providing energy storage and supply. They are integral components of cell membranes, nerve tissues, and hormones. Furthermore, fats protect internal organs and joints while providing insulation and warmth. They are widely found in vegetable oils, legumes, and soy products.
4. Carbohydrates
Carbohydrates, also known as sugars, are the primary source of energy for the human body. They are essential components of cells and tissues, facilitating the metabolism of other nutrients and combining with proteins and fats to form glycoproteins and glycolipids.
5. Vitamins
Vitamins play a vital role in maintaining human growth, development, and physiological functions. They are categorized into fat-soluble and water-soluble vitamins. Fat-soluble vitamins include Vitamins A, D, E, and K. These can be stored in the body, eliminating the need for daily intake from food, but excessive amounts can cause toxicity.The other category comprises water-soluble vitamins, including the B vitamins and vitamin C. These cannot be stored in the body and must be obtained daily from food. Due to their rapid metabolism, they are less likely to cause toxicity.Essential minerals for the human body include calcium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, and chloride. These minerals required in larger quantities are called macrominerals. Minerals needed in smaller amounts, such as iron, zinc, copper, manganese, cobalt, molybdenum, selenium, iodine, and chromium, are called trace minerals.
Trace elements constitute only 4% of human body weight but are indispensable components of living organisms.
7. Dietary Fiber
Dietary fiber refers to plant-based substances that cannot be digested or absorbed by intestinal enzymes. It is categorized into insoluble dietary fiber (coarse fiber) and soluble dietary fiber (fine fiber).Celery, fruit peels, wheat bran, and root vegetables are rich in insoluble dietary fiber. This type promotes intestinal peristalsis, increases stool bulk, and prevents constipation. Soluble dietary fiber absorbs water, expands, softens stool, and facilitates easier elimination. Foods like beans, carrots, and oats contain abundant soluble fiber.
