Spleen-Stomach Deficiency-Cold is a term in Traditional Chinese Medicine. It refers to a syndrome pattern characterized by deficiency of yang qi in the spleen and stomach, accompanied by an excess of yin cold internally. This includes deficiency of spleen yang and deficiency of stomach yang (though some interpretations focus solely on spleen yang deficiency). It is often caused by dietary imbalances, excessive consumption of raw or cold foods, overwork and fatigue, prolonged illness, or mental distress damaging the spleen.
Symptoms of Spleen-Stomach Deficiency-Cold
1. Localized Symptoms:
(1) Abdominal distension and pain, loss of appetite; bland taste in the mouth without thirst, minimal desire to eat, acid regurgitation (typically clear fluid without other substances).
(2) Persistent gastric pain, worsening on an empty stomach;
(3) Women may experience thin, profuse vaginal discharge, delayed menstruation with frequent blood clots;
(4) Cold sensation in the stomach, prone to diarrhea—especially after consuming cold or greasy foods, or during excessive fatigue/worry—with loose stools or white curd-like lumps.
2. General Symptoms:
(1) Pale, sallow complexion with lack of luster, low energy, and reluctance to speak.
(2) Cold intolerance: Patients feel chilly year-round, with cold extremities and pale complexion in winter, preferring warm beverages.
(3) Weak pulse, cold hands and feet, fatigue, poor appetite; symptoms worsen with exertion, cold food, or exposure to cold.
3. Tongue Manifestations: Pale, swollen, and tender tongue with a white, moist coating and a relatively pale tongue body.
4. Pulse Characteristics: Weak and feeble pulse, deep and slow pulse.
5. Other Symptoms: Some patients may also experience acid reflux, vomiting, abdominal distension, limb edema, aversion to cold with preference for warmth, and clear, prolonged or difficult urination.
How to Regulate Spleen-Stomach Deficiency-Cold
(1) Recommended Foods: Choose warm-natured, sweet-spicy foods that fortify the spleen, replenish qi, warm the gastrointestinal tract, and dispel cold. Examples include:pork tripe, chain fish, grass carp, lychee, chili peppers, leeks, fennel, mustard greens, cinnamon, dried ginger, fresh ginger, Sichuan pepper, black pepper, fennel seeds, white cardamom, brown sugar, etc.
(2) Avoid foods with cold properties that may impair spleen and stomach yang energy, such as buckwheat, oats, mung beans, tofu, spinach, water spinach, eggplant, black fungus, daylily buds, lettuce, winter melon, celery, amaranth,water chestnuts, cucumbers, bitter melon, watermelon, persimmons, bananas, loquats, pears, peaches, kiwis, spinach, clam meat, ophiopogon, snails, crabs, water chestnuts, and melons.
Additionally, those with cold-type stomach pain should avoid mung beans, dried persimmons, raw tomatoes, bamboo shoots, bottle gourds, raw cucumbers, kelp, raw lettuce, raw radishes, raw lotus roots, raw cucumbers, raw sweet potatoes, honeysuckle, chrysanthemum, mint, duck eggs, clams,water spinach, shepherd's purse, wood ear fungus, tofu, field horsetail, cold tea, and all chilled beverages or iced foods.
