How Men Can Build Abdominal Muscles
Well-defined abs are the ultimate proof of a great physique, and men with abs are always popular. So what are the best ways for men to build abs? Below, Health and Wellness Network has compiled 13 of the most effective abdominal exercises for men. Take a look.
1. Bicycle Crunches
Lie flat on your back and simulate pedaling a bicycle to alternately engage your abdominal muscles. Perform two sets of 24 repetitions each (12 extensions per leg), with a 30-second rest between sets.
2. Sit-Ups
The classic abdominal exercise primarily targeting the upper abdomen. Place hands behind the head during the movement. Never use hands to pull the neck to assist the body's bending. Perform 3 sets of 10-12 repetitions each, with a 30-second rest between sets.Leg Raises
Targets the lower abdomen and lower back. Beginners or those with weaker core strength may bend their knees to reduce difficulty. Ensure legs do not touch the floor during the lowering phase. Perform 3 sets of 10-12 repetitions each, with 30 seconds of rest between sets.
4. Lumberjack
Lumberjack is an effective exercise for the external obliques. Using weighted equipment provides additional muscle stimulation, helping define abdominal contours.
First, select a weighted tool (options include dumbbells, medicine balls, etc.). Choose a weight allowing 12 repetitions with proper form.Execute the movement following the "fast up, slow down" principle, ensuring the dumbbell is raised overhead each time. Complete 3 sets of 8-12 repetitions (one set consists of 8-12 reps on one side followed by the same number on the other side). Allow 30 seconds of rest between sets.
5. Trunk Twist
Target muscle groups: external obliques, upper abdomen, iliopsoas, serratus anterior. This exercise also requires a weighted implement (medicine ball preferred, dumbbells acceptable). Beginners may keep feet on the ground during weighted rotations to reduce difficulty. Intermediate to advanced practitioners may lift feet off the ground to increase intensity. Maintain a straight back throughout the rotation. Perform 3 sets of 12 repetitions each, with 30 seconds of rest between sets.
