White pollution is a colloquial term for environmental contamination caused by non-biodegradable plastic waste.It refers to various plastic products made from polymers like polystyrene, polypropylene, and polyvinyl chloride. After use, these items become solid waste. Due to indiscriminate littering and their difficulty in degrading, they cause severe urban environmental pollution. Long-term accumulation damages soil, contaminates groundwater, and threatens marine life.So how can we avoid white pollution in daily life?
1. Wrapping food in white paper or newspaper
Some individuals, and even food vendors, prefer using white paper to wrap food. While white paper may seem clean, its production involves bleaching agents and corrosive chemicals. Even after washing and filtering, the pulp retains significant chemical residues that can contaminate food.Using newspaper for food wrapping is even less advisable, as printing ink and other toxic substances used in newspaper production pose significant health risks. 2. Drying dishes or fruit with towels People often perceive tap water as unfiltered and unhygienic. Thus, after rinsing dishes or fruit under tap water, they frequently dry them with towels.While this practice appears hygienic and meticulous, it is actually counterproductive. Dry towels often harbor numerous pathogens. Currently, most urban tap water in China undergoes rigorous disinfection. Food rinsed with tap water is essentially clean and safe to use without needing to be dried with a towel. Some homemakers boil spoiled food after high-temperature, high-pressure processing, believing this thoroughly eliminates bacteria.Medical evidence shows that toxins secreted by bacteria before entering the human body are highly heat-resistant and difficult to destroy. Therefore, this method of treating leftover food with heat and pressure is not recommended.However, microbiology experts warn that even after removing the rotten section, the remaining fruit has been contaminated by bacterial metabolites through the juice. Microorganisms may even begin multiplying, with mold potentially causing cellular mutations and cancer. Therefore, any fruit showing signs of rot should be discarded rather than consumed.
4. Long-term use of the same medicated toothpaste
Medicated toothpaste has a certain inhibitory effect on some bacteria. However, prolonged use of the same type can cause oral bacteria to gradually adapt and develop resistance, rendering the toothpaste ineffective. Therefore, we should regularly switch toothpaste brands in daily life.
5. Using Alcohol to Disinfect Tableware
Some people wipe dishes with liquor, believing it disinfects. However, medical-grade disinfectant alcohol is 75% proof, while most liquors contain less than 56% alcohol. Thus, wiping dishes with liquor fails to achieve disinfection.
6. Wiping Tableware, Fruit, or Face with Toilet Paper
Laboratory tests show that many toilet papers (especially those sold by unregulated manufacturers in neighborhoods) are inadequately disinfected. They may contain large amounts of bacteria due to incomplete sterilization, or become contaminated during storage even if initially well-disinfected.Using such tissues to wipe dishes or fruit does not clean them effectively; instead, it introduces more bacteria to the food during the wiping process.
7. Drying Towels with Discarded Fluorescent Tubes
Fluorescent tubes contain toxic substances like mercury, phosphors, and trace ammonia. Some households dry towels or handkerchiefs on discarded tubes, believing them clean and hygienic. However, when damp, corrosion at the tube ends or minor cracks can cause these harmful substances to gradually seep out.Especially in warmer temperatures, mercury leakage increases, contaminating towels and handkerchiefs and posing health risks. If these substances come into direct contact with the eyes, they can cause vision impairment or even blindness. Therefore, dispose of used fluorescent tubes promptly and do not reuse them.
