So what are the steps for exfoliation? What are the correct methods for exfoliating? How can you make your own exfoliating mask? Below, Health and Wellness Guide introduces the proper exfoliation techniques and teaches you how to create your own exfoliating mask.
Steps and Correct Methods for Exfoliation
Thoroughly cleanse your face. Apply an exfoliating product and gently massage it onto your face, avoiding the eye area. Remember never to apply excessive pressure to prevent skin damage. After moderate massage, rinse thoroughly with water. You may also exfoliate during showering, as post-bath skin has higher moisture content and softened dead skin cells, making exfoliation more effective.
Avoid over-exfoliating. Generally, once a week is sufficient, though adjust based on your skin type: those with drier skin may exfoliate every two weeks, while those with oilier skin may exfoliate twice weekly as needed. Over-exfoliation can lead to dryness, flaking, sensitivity, and redness.
1. Wet your face. Take an appropriate amount of exfoliating product into your palm, add a little water to blend it for smoother application, and avoid the eye and lip areas. Gently glide and press the product onto your skin in outward motions from the center.Use a salicylic acid-based cleanser to wash your face. For the T-zone and forehead, cleanse in upward circular motions. For the sides of the nose in the T-zone, use circular motions starting from the base of the nostrils and moving toward the tip. For the cheeks, use broad upward circular motions.
2. Warm the exfoliating cream slightly between fingertips—body heat helps dissolve blackheads on the nose.Massage the sides of the nostrils in circular motions as well. For the bridge of the nose, use the pads of two fingers to massage up and down in an alternating pattern for 2-3 minutes. Avoid prolonged application. Starting from the tip of the nose, glide upward along the nasal bridge line to the sides of the forehead, then massage the entire forehead skin in a radial pattern.
3. Focus additional massage on areas prone to dead skin buildup: the bridge and sides of the nose, the forehead triangle, and the chin. Regularly massage the lymph nodes along the jawline in circular motions with your exfoliator. Press the knuckles along the cheekbones to brighten dullness and sculpt a V-shaped jawline.
4. Using fingertips, gently massage the neck skin upward from the base. Switch to horizontal strokes along the jawline. Cheeks are sensitive areas, so exfoliate lightly here. Avoid excessive pressure or scrubs with coarse particles.
5. After exfoliating the entire face, use a cotton pad to gently pat the cheeks, removing any excess exfoliating cream. Finally, apply a toner with astringent properties followed by a moisturizer.
