People should guard against such contamination. So how can we remove pesticides from vegetables?
So, how can we remove pesticide residues from these vegetables?
Simply put, methods like boiling, soaking, washing, and peeling should be employed. For example, bell peppers, cauliflower, tender corn, and celery can be pre-boiled before cooking. Discard the boiling water, as this removes over 70% of residual pesticides.For leeks, bok choy, spinach, and beans, after washing off dirt, soak them in clean water for 1-2 hours. Add one tablespoon of baking soda or a soybean-sized amount of alkali to the water during soaking. After soaking, rinse thoroughly several times.For flower vegetables like daylilies and chive blossoms, thoroughly rinse them in the sink, then soak them once more in salt water or alkaline water to completely remove residual pesticides. For vegetables like radishes, potatoes, cucumbers, and winter melon, peeling is the method to remove residual pesticides. After peeling, it's best to rinse them once more with clean water.
When purchasing vegetables at the market, it is essential to understand the pesticide contamination levels of various vegetables to ensure food safety.
Wild vegetables are rich in nutrients and generally uncontaminated. Examples include chickweed, purslane, broomweed, and dragon beard grass, which typically contain 20% more protein than common vegetables and dozens of minerals. Growing wild, they require no artificial fertilizers or herbicides.
Certain vegetables require minimal pesticide application. These either possess strong pest resistance or grow during winter when insect activity is low, such as cabbage, lettuce, celery, tomatoes, spinach, chives, garlic chives, and peppers.
Certain root vegetables like fresh lotus root, potatoes, taro, winter bamboo shoots, radishes, garlic, and turnips generally avoid pesticide application. Even if treated, residual pesticides are absorbed and decomposed by the soil during growth.
Cultivated edible fungi and various sprouts (excluding rootless bean sprouts) are free from pesticide contamination, as pesticides are rarely used during their growth and cultivation. Rootless bean sprouts are a type of vegetable grown using chemical substances without approval from health authorities, and consuming them is detrimental to health.
Currently, leafy vegetables like Chinese cabbage and water spinach often receive higher pesticide applications. Especially during dry summers, inspect purchases by smelling for pesticide residue and checking for perfect insect-free surfaces. Vegetables with a chemical odor or showing no insect damage may contain pesticide residues and should be avoided. If purchased, thoroughly wash them before consumption to reduce contamination.
