The best way to build abs boils down to one word: "train." No matter how good the method, it won't work if you don't train. To sculpt sexy, attractive abs, remember: "Consistent training is the ultimate key." Since training is essential, you can't stick to the same exercise routine when working your abs. You need to vary your ab exercises, stimulating your abs from different angles. Only then can you build abs faster and more effectively through consistent training. So how exactly do you build sexy, attractive abs?
How to Build Sexy, Attractive Abs
1. Leg Raise Crunch: Lie flat on your back with arms extended straight above your head. Bend your knees and lift your legs so thighs are perpendicular to the floor and calves roughly parallel to the floor. Contract your abs to pull your arms and knees closer together.Hold this position briefly, then slowly return to the starting position. Repeat 15-20 times.
2. Double-End Lift: Lie on your back with your head slightly elevated. Extend both legs horizontally without touching the ground. Stretch both arms straight above your head, forming a horizontal straight line with your body. Lift your arms forward while lifting your shoulders off the ground. Simultaneously raise your legs upward, reaching your hands to touch your calves.Pause briefly at the highest point, then lower back to the starting position. Sit up while exhaling, and return while inhaling. This movement requires simultaneous upper and lower body coordination, which can be challenging to master—keep practicing!
3. Supine Leg Raise: Lie on your back with arms straight at your sides, palms down. Raise both legs together.Maintain the knee angle as you lift both legs at a steady pace. At the highest point, continue the movement by lifting your hips off the ground. You should feel a strong contraction in your abdominal muscles. Hold for a few seconds, then slowly lower your legs along the same arc. Keep your legs off the ground throughout the entire movement.
4. Half-Side Waist Twist: Lie on your side with one elbow supporting your body and the other hand lightly touching your head. Keep your body in a straight line off the ground.Slowly rotate your body 90 degrees to face the floor. Primarily targets the obliques and transverse abdominis. 5. Plank Leg Lift: Assume a plank position with elbows on the ground, maintaining a straight line from head to heels while engaging your core. Lift your right leg parallel to the floor, keeping it at the same height as you open it approximately 30 degrees to the right, then return to parallel.
6. Weighted Twist: Stand with a barbell on shoulders, hands gripping for balance. Rotate torso left and right using oblique muscles, turning approximately 45 degrees. Control movement at full range. Perform 50-100 reps per set.
7. Side Bend Lifts: Stand with weight in one hand. Slowly lean your torso sideways to about 35 degrees, then slowly return to center. Perform about 20 reps per set, or as many as you can manage.
8. Single-Leg Lifts: Lie flat on your back with hands flat, head resting, and legs extended.Raise one leg upward without bending the knee, aiming for roughly perpendicular to the floor. Exhale and contract the abdominal muscles. Lower the leg back to the starting position while exhaling. Repeat on the opposite side. Perform 15 repetitions per side per set.
9. Ball Hold Sit-Up: Lie supine with knees bent and feet flat on the floor. Hold a ball at chest level with both hands. Contract the abdomen and curl upward. At the top of the curl, extend both arms upward toward the ceiling. As you return to the starting position, bring the ball back to your chest.
10. Passing Relay: Lie on your back with hands lightly touching the back of your head and legs clamped around an exercise ball. Lift your legs upward while contracting your abs to lift your shoulders off the ground. Raise your arms to pass the ball to your hands, then return to the starting position. Repeat, passing the ball back to your legs.
11. Air Cycling: Lie on your back with lower back pressed to the floor. Hands behind head. Raise legs and slowly pedal. Exhale as you lift upper body, touching left knee with right elbow. Return. Repeat with left elbow touching right knee.Legs suspended in the air with knees bent at 90 degrees. Hold a ball between knees. Slowly rotate hips, controlled movement of thighs toward left or right side.
13. Ball-Holding Twist: Sit on floor with knees bent. Curl upper body back at a 20–30 degree angle from lower back to floor.Keep arms close to sides with elbows bent at 90 degrees, holding a ball in front of chest. Slowly rotate upper body left and right. Perform 15 rotations per side.
TIPS: Many students ask why their necks feel sore during sit-ups—this is due to excessive neck tension.Try clasping your hands across your chest or pressing your tongue against the roof of your mouth~
Note: If you strengthen your abdominal muscles without correspondingly strengthening your erector spinae muscles, your posture may become awkward and potentially harmful. Therefore, it is recommended to incorporate one of the following exercises into your routine:
14. Goat Stretch: Lie prone, fully extending your body with legs and arms stretched out to the sides.Lengthen your spine, extend your arms, and slowly lift your shoulders. Engage your core and glutes, maintaining a straight line from neck to spine. Keep your lower back engaged throughout.
15. Swimming Pose: Lie prone, fully extend your body, and stretch your legs and arms outward.Lengthen your spine, extend your arms, and lift your shoulders and legs slightly off the ground. Engage your core and glutes, keeping your neck and spine in a straight line. Slowly raise your left arm and right leg, then lower them back to the starting position. Repeat with your right arm and left leg. Keep both legs and arms off the ground throughout to target your back muscles and glutes.
Additionally, no matter how many abdominal exercises you do, don't expect to see defined abs without controlling your diet. For sculpting muscle definition, a low-fat, low-sugar diet is fundamental. Ensure you consume ample vegetables and whole-grain carbohydrates. For protein intake, lean sources like chicken, fish, and turkey are preferable to higher-fat options such as beef or pork.
If you want a lean physique, robust health, and chiseled abs, you need to ramp up the intensity by selecting 5-6 exercises and performing 3 sets of each. Remember, pairing this with cardio will double your results! So make sure to hit the treadmill whenever you can.
Foods That Help Build Abs
1. Eggs
Nutrition science uses various methods to rate the growth-promoting power of different protein foods. Eggs rank near the top in almost every metric. They're highly digestible—your body easily breaks them down into amino acids, the building blocks of muscle. Eggs are also rich in healthy fats, saturated fats, and lecithin, all of which support muscle growth.
2. Fish
A 6-ounce serving of fish provides 34 grams of protein and 4 grams of omega-3 fatty acids—a healthy fat that reduces inflammation and aids muscle repair while helping suppress cortisol. Diets rich in omega-3s also direct most absorbed glucose into muscles instead of converting it to fat.Whole-Grain Bread
Limit refined carbohydrates, as they contain less fiber and nutrients than whole grains and often spike insulin levels. Whole-grain bread is excellent post-workout. You need easily digestible carbs to replenish depleted muscle glycogen stores, boost insulin secretion for muscle growth, and suppress post-training cortisol.
4. Beef
Many people struggling to gain muscle mistakenly avoid fat, believing it increases body fat. However, the saturated fat in beef can actually aid muscle growth when combined with omega-3s found in fish. Insufficient saturated fat intake can harm levels of hormones like testosterone and insulin-like growth factor, which support muscle development.Beef also provides cholesterol, the primary building block for the body's testosterone synthesis. Additionally, it's rich in creatine, B vitamins, and zinc.
