When a young couple decides to expand their family, they don't simply embark on a baby-making journey without preparation. For some couples, this journey isn't always smooth. Understanding how to conceive effectively allows couples to prepare optimally for pregnancy, increasing the likelihood of welcoming a healthy, adorable baby sooner.
Pre-pregnancy Preparation
When deciding to prepare for pregnancy to build a more harmonious family, remember to prioritize pre-pregnancy preparations before rushing to create an ideal environment for the baby. After all, these preparations form the crucial foundation for nurturing a healthy baby.
1. Supplement with Folic Acid and Essential Micronutrients
Even with a balanced diet, it's challenging to ensure you're getting all necessary nutrients. Folic acid deficiency is common among women of childbearing age in China, a fact that warrants serious attention. You can purchase folic acid supplements (or folic acid tablets) at pharmacies or take prenatal multivitamins. However, if taking a multivitamin, ensure its vitamin A content does not exceed the daily allowable limit of 0.77 milligrams (2,565 International Units) of retinol equivalents (RAE), unless it is in the form of beta-carotene. Excessive vitamin A intake may cause birth defects. If unsure which supplement to choose, consult your doctor first.
Based on your individual health status, increase intake of specific micronutrients: Deficiencies in calcium, iron, vitamin A, and other micronutrients not only impact women's health but directly affect fetal growth and development. Women planning pregnancy should pay special attention to these nutrients. Consider consulting a doctor for a nutritional assessment to gain a comprehensive understanding of your nutritional status. Then purposefully adjust your diet, focusing on increasing intake of nutrients typically found at lower levels in your body.
2. Eliminate tobacco, alcohol, and drugs
If you smoke or use drugs, quit immediately. Extensive research shows smoking and drug use can cause miscarriage, premature birth, and low birth weight. Studies also indicate smoking may impair fertility and reduce male sperm count. Even secondhand smoke can affect your chances of conception.Experts advise expectant mothers to avoid alcohol during pregnancy. Therefore, it's best to reduce your alcohol intake before conception, especially during the last two weeks of your menstrual cycle, in case you are already pregnant.
3. Limit Caffeine
Studies indicate that excessive caffeine intake can hinder iron absorption and increase the risk of stillbirth. It's advisable to avoid caffeinated beverages like coffee, tea, and cola. However, when quitting, do so gradually rather than abruptly to avoid headaches. If you're truly addicted, limit yourself to one cup per day—a safe limit recognized by most experts. 4. Manage Your Weight If your weight falls within the normal range, your chances of conception are higher.Studies show women with a BMI below 20 or above 30 face greater difficulty conceiving. Aim to maintain your BMI between 20 and 30 before trying to conceive. Calculate your BMI now. 5. Choose Healthy Foods Selecting nutritious foods now helps build a beneficial nutritional foundation for your future baby.Aim to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables daily, along with whole grains and calcium-rich foods like milk and yogurt. However, if you enjoy fish, be aware that oily fish such as shark, swordfish, and mackerel often contain high levels of mercury (typically in the form of methylmercury). High methylmercury intake can harm fetal brain development. Therefore, limit consumption of these fish to no more than twice weekly.
6. Develop and stick to a fitness routine
According to the American College of Sports Medicine, a healthy fitness plan includes: 1) 20–60 minutes of aerobic exercise (like walking or cycling) 3–5 days per week; 2) Muscle-strengthening activities (such as weight training) 2–3 days per week; 3)flexibility exercises 2–3 days per week, such as daily stretching or yoga. However, if you are not accustomed to regular exercise, begin your fitness plan gradually. Start with light activities like a 10–20 minute daily walk, or incorporate movement into daily routines—take the stairs instead of the elevator, or exit public transit one or two stops early and walk the rest of the way.
