Many people assume dental fillings require plaster application, but this process takes considerable time. Consequently, most are unclear about how quickly dental filling plaster heals. Below, we address the question of plaster recovery time.
Dental Filling Plaster Recovery Time
Generally, avoid eating with the newly filled tooth for at least two hours post-treatment, as most filling materials require 24 hours for complete curing.
Additionally, if you experience pain after eating extremely cold or hot foods, monitor the situation. If the pain is mild and noticeably decreasing, no action may be needed. However, persistent or worsening pain that doesn't subside could indicate pulpitis or apical periodontitis, requiring prompt dental care.
Another important note: If you experience periodontal pain after a filling—such as a dull ache when biting that subsides when not biting, and unrelated to hot or cold foods—this may indicate the filling material was placed too high, causing premature contact and periodontal trauma, or it could be due to medication-induced gingivitis. If persistent dull pain occurs after filling, with a clear location that worsens during chewing and is unrelated to hot/cold foods, this may indicate inadequate interproximal finishing of the filling material, leading to gingivitis from food debris accumulation.
I. Light-Cured Composite Resin: 1. Avoid brushing the restoration surface with a hard-bristled toothbrush for one week, as the resin achieves only 50% curing within the first week, reaching 90% within 24 hours and 100% after seven days. 2. Do not bite hard objects with the restoration. Minimize consumption of strong tea and smoking. Avoid metal contact or friction with the restoration surface to prevent staining.3. Contact your dentist immediately if discomfort occurs.
II. Silver Amalgam Fillings: The filling material stabilizes after 24 hours. Avoid chewing hard foods with the treated tooth for the first 24 hours to prevent fracture or dislodgement of the filling.
III. Glass Ionomer Fillings: Glass ionomer fully cures after 24 hours. Chewing on the treated side should resume only after this period, starting with soft foods and gradually progressing to normal chewing.
The recovery time for dental filling materials largely depends on post-treatment care and precautions. Choosing a reputable dental clinic for the initial filling procedure is crucial to ensure satisfactory results.
