How should you drink water to stay healthy? Many businesses exaggerate their claims about water benefits. Do you know what effects these waters actually have? What's the right way to drink them? So how should you drink water to stay healthy?
Beyond common mineral water, green tea, and fresh-squeezed juice, many liquid beverages like yogurt drinks, honey water, and soy milk also claim health benefits. Only when consumed correctly can they be truly healthy.
1. Lemon Water
Rich in vitamin C and hydroxy acids, lemon water helps balance gastrointestinal function, accelerates digestive processes, promotes intestinal motility, and flushes accumulated toxins from the body. It's ideal for consumption upon waking or with breakfast. However, note that while the organic acids in lemons are beneficial, they can irritate the stomach lining and increase gastric acid secretion. Therefore, individuals with sensitive stomachs should avoid drinking it on an empty stomach.Functional beverages primarily serve to replenish energy, maintain electrolyte balance, and alleviate fatigue. They are generally best consumed after strenuous exercise or intense work when significant sweating occurs. 3. Honey Water Honey should ideally be diluted with lukewarm water below 40°C (104°F) or cooled boiled water. Especially during hot summers, mixing honey with chilled boiled water creates an excellent cooling health beverage that helps beat the heat and reduce body temperature.Never mix honey with boiling water or subject it to high-temperature cooking. Improper heating severely degrades honey's nutrients, deactivates enzymes, darkens its color, evaporates its aroma, alters its flavor, and imparts an unpleasant sour taste.
4. Soda Water
The human body exhibits an external acidity and internal alkalinity. Simply put, the skin—acting as a barrier organ—maintains a mildly acidic state, while the body's internal environment remains slightly alkaline. Health issues arise when this acid-alkaline balance is disrupted.Soda water is an alkaline beverage. This soft drink containing sodium bicarbonate not only helps balance the internal environment but also alleviates fatigue, suppresses minor inflammation, neutralizes acidity, and soothes the stomach. Therefore, it's advisable to drink some when feeling unwell, experiencing stomach pain or acidity, or dealing with stress and fatigue.
5. Coconut Water
Everyone knows coconuts, right? Coconut water comes from the coconut's milk and flesh. It's rich in essential elements like sodium, potassium, and magnesium.
The coconut pulp fiber in coconut water is an excellent source of dietary fiber. It not only provides a feeling of fullness but also helps cleanse the intestines, accelerate intestinal peristalsis, and remove toxins adhering to the intestinal walls. Essential nutrients and minerals in coconut water can supplement daily requirements, boost metabolism, and promote faster fat burning. Therefore, coconut water is highly suitable for consumption during weight loss and body maintenance phases.
6. Tea
Many people are not particular about brewing tea, but in fact, there is a lot of skill involved. Tea requires lukewarm water, not hot water, and the temperature should be controlled around 60°C. After boiling the water, let it cool down before brewing the tea.
Typically, the first infusion should be poured after about 45 seconds. At this point, cancer-fighting compounds like polyphenols and water-soluble vitamins B1, B2, and C have already been extracted.
7. Freshly Squeezed Juice
The process of juicing fruits causes significant loss of dietary fiber essential for human health. Water-soluble fiber, represented by pectin, offers health benefits in preventing and reducing diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. Insoluble fiber, meanwhile, primarily helps prevent gastrointestinal disorders by stimulating intestinal peristalsis and promoting bowel movements. The best way to address the low dietary fiber content in juice is to consume the solid pulp left after juicing, ensuring no nutritional loss. Additionally, avoid heating fruit after juicing, as this can degrade vitamins to varying degrees. 8. Yogurt For healthy individuals, consuming one or two servings daily—approximately 250-500g—is appropriate. It's best to consume it 30 minutes to an hour after meals to regulate gut flora and promote overall health. Never heat yogurt before drinking. Heating or diluting yogurt with boiling water kills most of its active, lactic acid bacteria. This not only eliminates its distinctive flavor but also destroys its nutritional value.
9. Soy Milk
Never consume uncooked soy milk, and avoid adding eggs to it. The mucoprotein in eggs readily binds with trypsin in soy milk, forming an indigestible compound that significantly reduces nutrient absorption.Office workers should also avoid storing soy milk in thermoses. Soy milk contains substances that remove scale from thermos interiors. Under suitable temperatures, bacteria feed on the soy milk and multiply rapidly, causing the milk to sour and spoil within 3-4 hours.
How should one drink water for optimal health? By now, you likely understand that water benefits health only when consumed correctly. Make it a habit to drink more plain water daily—the body desperately needs hydration. Never wait until you feel thirsty to drink water; this is extremely unhealthy.
