Bathing is a common daily activity for everyone, but for individuals with ichthyosis, bathing requires specific knowledge. Proper bathing techniques can prevent the onset of ichthyosis, while improper methods may worsen or trigger flare-ups. So, what precautions should ichthyosis patients take during bathing this winter? Let's review expert recommendations.
1. Appropriate Water Temperature
Water that is too hot (above 40°C/104°F) can irritate lesions and cause adverse effects. Water that is too cold (below 34°C/93°F) fails to soften scales effectively or promote skin circulation, hindering lesion healing. Generally, water should feel slightly warm or mildly hot to the patient, ideally between 35–39°C (95–102°F).Water temperature can also be adjusted based on lesion type: during the progressive phase of common ichthyosis, or for erythrodermic, pustular, or exudative lesions, avoid excessive stimulation by using cooler water. Conversely, for stable lesions—especially thickened plaque-type lesions—slightly warmer water may be suitable.
II. Frequency and Duration of Bathing
During colder seasons, healthy individuals typically bathe 1–2 times weekly. Ichthyosis patients, if possible, should bathe daily. Medicated baths or mineral baths are even more beneficial.Clinical experience shows that patients who consistently bathe 1-2 times daily for 20-40 minutes typically achieve recovery faster than those using the same medication without bathing. The duration per bath varies based on water temperature and individual tolerance, generally ranging from 20 to 50 minutes.
Friendly Reminder: Skin thrives through scientifically sound bathing practices. Ichthyosis patients should heed expert warnings against using excessively hot or cold water, opting instead for moderately warm temperatures. Additionally, bathing frequency should neither be too infrequent nor excessive during winter months. We hope ichthyosis patients achieve health sooner through sensible lifestyle choices.
