Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a common condition among middle-aged and elderly men, significantly impacting daily life once developed. What are the common complications associated with this disease? Are there effective preventive measures? Below are methods to help prevent BPH for your reference.
Complications of Prostatic Hyperplasia
Bladder Stones
The development of bladder stones is closely linked to the pathogenesis of prostatic hyperplasia. When urinary flow is unobstructed, the bladder typically does not form stones, and any existing stones can be expelled through urination. However, patients with prostatic hyperplasia experience difficulty urinating and urinary obstruction, which can lead to the formation of bladder stones over time.
Urinary Retention
Urinary retention can occur at any stage of BPH. It may be triggered by sudden prostate congestion or edema caused by factors like climate changes, excessive alcohol consumption, or fatigue. Immediate treatment is essential when urinary retention occurs.
Uremia
BPH compresses the urethra, forcing the bladder to contract vigorously to overcome resistance and expel urine. Over time, this causes bladder muscle hypertrophy and increased pressure. If bladder pressure remains unrelieved for an extended period, residual urine gradually accumulates within the bladder. This leads to ischemia and hypoxia in the bladder muscles, causing them to lose tone. The bladder cavity expands, allowing urine to reflux into the ureters and renal pelvis, resulting in hydronephrosis. Ultimately, this can progress to uremia.
Hernias and Hemorrhoids
When men with BPH experience urinary difficulty, they must strain to urinate normally. This prolonged straining causes the intestines to protrude through weaker areas of the abdominal wall, forming hernias.Additionally, increased intra-abdominal pressure during straining obstructs venous return, causing congestion in the plexuses above and below the rectum and leading to hemorrhoid formation. Preventive Measures for Prostatic Hyperplasia 1. Opt for light, easily digestible foods. Increase intake of vegetables and fruits while minimizing spicy or irritating foods. Abstain from alcohol to reduce opportunities for prostate congestion.
2. Engage in moderate physical activity to enhance overall resistance and improve local blood circulation in the prostate.
4. Maintain emotional well-being by avoiding excessive worry, anger, and fatigue.
5. Promptly treat urinary tract infections and actively prevent urinary retention.
6. Regarding sexual activity, neither excessive indulgence nor complete abstinence is advisable; adjust according to age and health status.
