What foods cause infertility? Infertility stems from various factors, including genetic predispositions and environmental influences. Among environmental factors, diet ranks as the primary cause of infertility. So what foods contribute to infertility?
What foods cause infertility?
1.Alcohol
The primary component of alcohol is ethanol. Ethanol increases catecholamine levels in the body, causing vascular spasm, testicular hypoplasia, and even testicular atrophy. This leads to structural changes in spermatogenesis, insufficient secretion of male hormones like testosterone, and feminizing effects such as a higher-pitched voice and breast enlargement.Such individuals are prone to male infertility, and even if conception occurs, the offspring may have a higher risk of birth defects. In women, it can cause menstrual irregularities, amenorrhea, abnormal egg development, loss of libido, or cessation of ovulation.
2. Garlic
Excessive garlic consumption weakens vitality and has a significant spermicidal effect. For young adults of reproductive age, overconsumption can adversely affect fertility and should therefore be avoided.
3. Sunflower Seeds
The protein in sunflower seeds contains components that inhibit testicular function, potentially causing testicular atrophy and impairing normal reproductive capabilities. Thus, young adults of childbearing age should avoid excessive consumption.
4. Coffee
Coffee directly impacts conception. Among women who drink more than one cup daily, the likelihood of pregnancy is only half that of non-drinkers. Therefore, it is recommended that women planning pregnancy reduce coffee consumption. However, excessive consumption by women can lead to amenorrhea and suppression of normal ovarian ovulation due to high carotene intake. Thus, women seeking pregnancy should avoid large quantities of carrots.
6. Grilled Beef and Mutton
Grilled beef and mutton are traditional foods in regions like Inner Mongolia and Xinjiang. Studies have found that children born to women who frequently consumed grilled mutton exhibited intellectual disabilities, paralysis, or deformities.Investigations and modern medical research indicate that both these women and their deformed children were victims of toxoplasmosis infection. Infection commonly occurs when people come into contact with livestock infected with toxoplasmosis and consume undercooked meat from these animals.
7. Crude cottonseed oil
Long-term consumption of crude cottonseed oil can cause sun-induced illness, manifesting as symptoms after sun exposure: generalized weakness or reduced sweating, burning and flushed skin, palpitations and shortness of breath, dizziness and blurred vision, limb numbness, and decreased appetite. More severe effects include damage to the reproductive system.Experimental studies indicate that rats fed cottonseed oil-containing diets for approximately four months exhibited significantly shrunken testes, markedly reduced or absent sperm cells, uterine atrophy with endometrial and glandular degeneration, mild ovarian atrophy, and mild edema in renal parenchymal cells. In adult males, daily administration of 60-70 mg of gossypol (an extract from cottonseed oil) for 40 days resulted in complete sperm destruction within a short period, with gradual disappearance from semen. In females, it may cause amenorrhea or uterine atrophy. Therefore, young adults of childbearing age should avoid long-term consumption.
What foods cause infertility? The above seven foods can lead to varying degrees of infertility in women or men. It is advisable to limit consumption of these foods in daily life. To enhance fertility, consider increasing intake of foods rich in zinc, arginine, protein, vitamin E, and vitamin C.
