Exercise Is the "Best Medicine" for Good Sleep

Moderate exercise can increase your deep sleep. Sleep is the best way to rest your brain and body, while exercise is another method to relax both mind and body. Exercise accelerates blood circulation, boosts metabolism, and promotes detoxification. It connects people with nature, broadening their horizons. Pre-sleep exercise reduces anxiety, extends sleep duration, and improves sleep quality. Thus, exercise can replace medication, but no medication can replace exercise.
Regular exercisers fall asleep faster, experience deeper sleep, enjoy longer sleep duration, and feel less daytime fatigue compared to non-exercisers. Australian sleep researchers compared sleep patterns between a running group (averaging 45 miles weekly) and a non-exercising group, finding the runners had 18% more total deep sleep time.
Moderate physical activity stimulates the brain to release substances that inhibit excitement, promoting deep sleep, rapidly alleviating fatigue, and thereby entering a virtuous cycle of sleep.
Increase outdoor activities and sun exposure
People who engage in long-term outdoor activities rarely suffer from insomnia, for two reasons:First, melatonin regulates sleep. Its secretion follows a cyclical pattern with significant diurnal fluctuations, and higher melatonin levels correlate with better sleep quality. Light exposure suppresses melatonin production, while darkness triggers its release. Individuals who spend more daylight hours outdoors experience higher melatonin levels at night, increasing drowsiness and facilitating sleep onset.Second, increased sun exposure elevates body temperature and metabolic activity, promoting daytime alertness and nighttime fatigue. Don't underestimate the power of walking An evening stroll can significantly improve your sleep. This low-intensity exercise induces mild physical fatigue, signaling to your brain that "proper rest is essential to recover from exhaustion and ensure energy the next day." Consistent walking over time can thus greatly alleviate insomnia.
For sounder sleep, take a walk after dinner, ideally lasting 30-60 minutes. This is especially beneficial for knowledge workers whose day-to-day tasks are largely sedentary. Light evening activity can counteract inactivity and promote sleep. Studies show mild exercises like jogging or walking before bedtime raise body temperature.Stop jogging once you break a light sweat (typically after 20-30 minutes). Your body temperature will then begin to drop. Going to bed 30-40 minutes later facilitates deep sleep and enhances sleep quality.
Intense exercise before bed, however, can worsen insomnia.
Regular exercise not only relieves stress and reduces nighttime awakenings but also extends sleep duration and alleviates insomnia symptoms.
After jogging until you break a light sweat, taking a warm bath before bed can help you fall asleep quickly and maintain sleep quality.
However, avoid strenuous exercise. Excessive, intense activity right before bed stimulates the brain and hinders sleep quality.
