I. Can sprouted taro be eaten?
Sprouted taro is safe to consume.
Taro boasts a smooth, soft texture with a sweet, sticky, and fragrant flavor. Its nutritional profile resembles that of potatoes. Free from solanine, it is easily digestible and non-toxic, making it a beloved alkaline root vegetable.
However, sprouting consumes some nutrients, resulting in a slightly inferior texture and reduced nutritional content. This poses no harm to human health.
It's perfectly fine for consumption. In fact, taro often sprouts before being harvested from the field. Farmers typically separate the stems and leaves from the tubers before selling them.
You can often see where the leaves once grew on the tuber itself.
Sprouted taro is quite tasty. In contrast, sprouted potatoes are inedible due to solanine production, while raw sprouted sweet potatoes cause diarrhea—cooking them is safe.

II. Storage Methods for Taro
1. Store taro in a dry, cool, and well-ventilated place.
2. Consume it as soon as possible after purchase, as taro softens easily.
3. Taro is sensitive to cold temperatures. Fresh taro must never be refrigerated. When temperatures drop below 7°C (45°F), store indoors in a warmer location to prevent rot caused by frostbite.
5. Store in a well-ventilated warehouse at 10–15°C (50–59°F) with 85–90% relative humidity for up to 5–6 months.
6. Important note: During initial storage, high ambient temperatures cause vigorous respiration. Ensure adequate ventilation to dissipate heat and maintain pile temperatures below 15°C (59°F).
