Is duck down or goose down better for down jackets?
Goose down is superior.
1. Goose down has smaller quill knobs on its feather shafts, whereas duck down has larger quill knobs concentrated mainly at the tips of the smaller feather shafts. This creates greater spacing between goose down clusters, resulting in higher loft and superior insulation compared to duck down jackets.
2. Goose down exhibits superior flexibility, feeling smoother and softer to the touch than duck down while offering better elasticity. When pressed and released, it quickly rebounds, providing greater comfort when worn.
3. Geese are herbivores, while ducks are omnivores. Consequently, goose down emits significantly less odor than duck down, resulting in less noticeable scent in finished jackets. Additionally, goose down tends to last longer than duck down.
Check the Label
To verify if a garment contains genuine down, first examine its label. If down is used, the label typically specifies the material composition, down content percentage, net fill weight, and care instructions.
Press with your hand
Alternatively, lay the garment flat and allow it to naturally recover for about 2 minutes. Then press down firmly with your hand and release. If the down jacket quickly springs back and regains its original shape, it indicates genuine down. However, if the garment depresses slowly and recovers only minimally, it suggests the down is not authentic.
Weight Test
Holding the garment in your hand provides another indicator. Genuine down jackets are made with down feathers, so they typically feel light and airy. If the jacket feels heavy in your hand, it may be filled with shredded down or cotton batting.
Tap it
In a well-lit area, fold the jacket and tap it. If dust particles emerge, it's not genuine down. A jacket made with real down won't release dust after tapping.
