The vast array of yoga poses can be overwhelming. Each pose targets specific body areas and serves as an effective weight-loss method. More importantly, practicing yoga cultivates mental discipline and enhances personal poise. So what are the classic yoga poses?
1. Tree Pose:
Stand with feet together in Mountain Pose, toes spread wide and lengthened. Engage your front thigh muscles to activate the muscles near your knees. Straighten your spine, lift your chest, and open your shoulders. Bring your palms together in prayer position, thumbs near your chest, elbows bent close to your body.Lift your left foot and press it firmly against the inner thigh of your right leg (use your hands for support if needed). Maintain balance while keeping your right leg fully extended. Hold for five breaths. If flexibility is limited, place your left foot on your calf or ankle. Imagine yourself rooted like a tree, breathing deeply into the earth.
2. Crescent Pose:
From Tree Pose, step your left foot back into a wide stance with heel lifted and leg extended. Bend your right knee so it aligns with your hip, arms raised overhead with palms pressed together. Press shoulders and upper back downward, holding for 5 breaths.
3. Half Moon:
From T-Pose, place your right fingertips on the floor (use a book or cushion if you can't reach). Shift weight onto your right hand and leg. Lift your left foot off the floor, rotate your left shoulder, and align your hips and left leg parallel to the ground. To maintain balance, lift your gaze upward. Hold for 5 breaths. To exit, rotate your torso and hips forward, returning to Mountain Pose.
4. Triangle Pose:
From Mountain Pose, step your right foot back two feet. Turn your right foot and outer leg out to 90 degrees. Step your left foot forward, using your leg as the center point. Rotate your hips forward so your right heel aligns with the top of your left foot.Raise arms overhead, palms facing down. Straighten the leg (if not possible, bend the knee to 90 degrees), lengthen torso and arms, and inhale. Place the opposite hand on the shin, ankle, or floor, keeping the left and right arms in a straight line. Lift your gaze upward and hold for 5 breaths. Return to the starting position and repeat on the other side.
5. Warrior Pose:
From Crescent Pose, place your left foot flat with toes turned out 30 degrees. Keep the leg straight as you rotate your hips 90 degrees. Align your right heel with the top of your left foot, maintaining a 90-degree bend in the knee. Relax your hips, torso, and shoulders, keeping them centered. Extend both arms out to shoulder height, palms facing down.Reach your fingertips as if touching a wall. Focus your gaze on your right middle finger and hold for 5 breaths.
6. T Pose:
From Warrior Pose, place hands on hips. Lean your torso straight forward, lift your left foot, find your balance, then fully extend your torso forward. Raise your left leg until your body and left leg are parallel.Fully extend your left leg from hip to toe. Keep your hips level and face toward the floor. Extend both arms straight alongside your body, palms facing inward, and hold for 5 breaths. If this pose is too challenging, you can initially rest your leg on a chair.
